RTX 5080 touted to enjoy massive performance bump vs RTX 4080 alongside increase in power consumption
We reported previously that the RTX 50 Blackwell GPUs are set to be more power-hungry than their RTX 40 counterparts. While we did state some rudimentary power consumption figures for the RTX 5090, the RTX 5070, and the RTX 5080, we didn’t have any concrete figures to share.
Since then, kopite7kimi has added to their leak and we now know the exact power requirements of the RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080.
According to kopite7kimi, the RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080 will consume 600 W and 400 W respectively. Assuming these figures are referring to the TGP, this is an increase of 150 W for the RTX 5090 and 80 W for the RTX 5080.
In addition to revealing the power figures for the Blackwell GPUs, kopite7kimi has also claimed a massive performance increase for the RTX 5080.
RTX 5080 performance
VideoCardz reports that, per kopite7kimi, the RTX 5080 will have a 10% performance increase over the RTX 4090 (Available on Amazon). To put this into perspective, RTX 4080 suffers from a performance deficit of 23% vs the RTX 4090 per our testing. With the RTX 5080 alleged to outperform the RTX 4090 by 10%, we are looking at an increase of at least 30% for the Blackwell GPU.
Although this is a rather big performance bump, it is nowhere near the delta we saw with the RTX 4080 which is more than 50% faster than the RTX 3080.
Unsurprisingly, AMD’s most powerful next-gen GPU, the Navi 48, stands no chance of competing with the RTX 5080 as leaks suggest only RTX 4080-matching rasterization performance for Team Red’s offering. This will leave a big gap between the alleged RX 8800 XT and the RTX 5080.
Nevertheless, we hope AMD at least prices the RX 8800 XT right as the RTX 5080 is likely to cost a lot.
