RTX 4080 Super and RTX 4090 GPUs to start disappearing from market soon as Nvidia prepares for RTX 50 launch
More than two years after the debut of the RTX 40 cards in October 2022, Nvidia is expected to kick off the RTX 50 “Blackwell” GPU series early next year. Chances are Nvidia, unlike the RTX 40 launch, will debut both the RTX 5090 and the RTX 5080 cards simultaneously.
As if to prepare for the RTX 50 launch, Nvidia reportedly discontinued the RTX 4090 in September and there won’t be any new supply of the GPUs. This means the RTX 4090 cards currently on sale are unlikely to be restocked.
Additionally, per a rumor from the Chinese Board Channels, Nvidia will also cease the production of the RTX 4080 Super this month. So, AIBs won’t be supplying any new RTX 4080 Super boards once the retailers run out of stock.
This latest development follows a rumor from early August that Nvidia had cut the supply of RTX 40 GPUs ranging from RTX 4070 to RTX 4090 by up to 50%.
RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 Super current prices
Naturally, the purported cessation of RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 Super production will have a drastic effect on the pricing of these models. We can already see hints of this happening on retailers like Newegg where the cheapest RTX 4090 board costs $1,929.99 brand new. More importantly, there are only four RTX 4090 models below $2000 on Newegg, as most RTX 4090 variants cost north of $2,000.
The situation is a little better on Amazon where, at the time of writing, you can find the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming OC for $1,800. However, the overall pricing is relatively similar to Newegg, as most SKUs are priced at or above $2,000.
When it comes to the RTX 4080 Super, Newegg currently has one model, the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4080 Super Windforce, on sale at $999.99 MSRP. That said, the majority of RTX 4080 Super variants on Newegg are retailing for above $1,100.
Once again, Amazon has Newegg beat in terms of RTX 4080 Super pricing, as plenty of cards are in stock at the $999.99 MSRP. However, we can expect the situation to change rather quickly as we move closer to the launch of the RTX 50 cards.
