RDNA 4 memory specs leak: Top-end Navi 48 reportedly enjoys more memory bandwidth than RX 7800 XT

Three possible memory configurations for the RDNA 4-based RX 8000 GPUs have leaked on X. According to the leaked information, the memory inside the RX 8000 GPUs will top out at 20 Gbps GDDR6 alongside a 256-bit memory interface.

AMD’s next-generation RDNA 4 GPUs are on their way. Thanks to a ton of leaks and rumors, we know that AMD is skipping the high-end segment this time around as RDNA 4 will only cater to the mid-range and entry-level buyers. The two GPUs that are in the middle of this strategy are reported to be the Navi 48 and the Navi 44.

Now, thanks to serial leaker @Kepler_L2 on X, we have the possible memory configurations of the RDNA 4 GPUs. Unfortunately, the information could be disappointing for some fans.

RDNA 4 memory specification

According to @kepler_L2, the RDNA 4 GPUs have three possible memory configurations:

  • 256-bit wide memory bus with 20 Gbps GDDR6 memory
  • 256-bit wide bus and 18 Gbps GDDR6 memory
  • 192-bit wide bus with 19 Gbps GDDR6 memory

Based on these figures, the top-end Navi 48 card, possibly the RX 8800 XT, should have a memory bandwidth of 640 GB/s followed by 576 GB/s for boards with slower 18 Gbps memory. At the bottom, we have a total bandwidth of 456 GB/s for GPUs with a 192-bit wide bus and a 19 Gbps memory speed.

Keeping this in mind and considering that the RDNA 4 Navi 48 and Navi 44 GPUs are expected to top out 16 GB of VRAM, the Radeon RX 8000 boards won’t be bringing any substantial memory upgrades to the table. For instance, the RX 7800 XT has a memory bandwidth of 620 GB/s due to its slightly slower 19.5 Gbps memory.

Additionally, Kepler’s assertion may only be true for the mid-range Navi 48-based boards as low-end/entry-level Navi 44 cards might end up with only a 128-bit wide bus as revealed by previous leaks.

For what it’s worth, we hope that Team Red at least makes 12 GB the minimum amount of VRAM on next-gen GPU as it has been well established that 8 GB is not enough for modern AAA games.

Navi 48 and Navi 44 specifications

Navi 48, the bigger of the two RDNA 4 GPUs, is expected to feature up to 64 CUs, 16 GB of VRAM, and a 3 GHz+ clock speed. The GPU also reportedly boasts up to 96 MB of Infinity Cache, a 210-280 W TDP, and a $499-$599 MSRP.

When it comes to performance, Moore’s Law is Dead has claimed that the RX 8800 XT could deliver rasterization and raytracing performance in line with the RTX 4080 and the RTX 4070 Ti Super respectively.

For the smaller Navi 44, we are looking at a GPU with potentially 32 CUs and a 128-bit wide bus. With these specs, the Navi 44-based boards might end up with rasterization performance between the RX 7600 XT and the RX 7800 XT (Available on Amazon).

As always, leaks should always be taken with caution since it is all too common for retail products to differ markedly from pre-release information.
