The official RPCS3 account on X has revealed some interesting information regarding the distribution of the PlayStation 3 emulator's user base on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Unsurprisingly, Windows is by far the most dominant platform.

RPCS3 is the most popular PS3 emulator on the planet and for good reason. At the time of writing, RPCS3 allows you to play more than 2,700 PS3 games, which constitutes around 76% of the PS3 library indexed by RPCS3. This is not only huge for people who want to keep enjoying their PS3 games but is also super important for game preservation efforts.

On the topic of people enjoying their PS3 games, the official RPCS3 account on X has revealed that almost all of these people are on Windows. 90% of RPCS3 users run the PS3 emulator on Windows. Linux and macOS account for just 6% and 4%, respectively.

This will be disappointing news for Linux fans who hoped that Linux emerging as a viable alternative to Windows for gaming could drive more people to the operating system. Linux has indeed come a long way when it comes to games, thanks in no small part to Valve’s efforts.

In fact, RPCS3 reports that the emulator runs much faster on Linux than on Windows. So, even when Linux has a speed advantage, Windows remains the dominant force. This could be explained by the ease of setting things up on Windows vs Linux due to the large user base and tons of support online.

There is also the issue of the learning curve that comes with jumping to a new platform. Gamers, as a whole, are comfortable with Windows, which is a huge roadblock to Linux adoption.

That said, if Windows 11 continues to be a bloated operating system riddled with inconsistencies, it won’t be long before gamers reach a breaking point and jump ship en masse. Microsoft realizes this and is making efforts to solve issues such as reducing Windows 11’s resource usage.
