The R39 Max is a new gaming handheld with a 1:1 and 720p IPS display. Seemingly an R36S Plus by another name, the R39 Max comes in multiple colours and should be powerful enough to emulate many classic systems including the extensive Game Boy back catalogue.

The gaming handheld market is awash with countless devices aimed at fulfilling the smallest niche. For example, MagicX released the Zero 40 last month for the primary purpose of emulating Nintendo DS games (curr. $94.99 on Amazon). Incidentally, the company has now announced a new device for playing Nintendo 3DS games too, details of which we have provided separately.

Moreover, numerous copycat units exist, like the R36S, R36S Plus, V40 Max or the X35S. Now, the R39 Max can be added to that list with a design that is similar to the V40 Max that arrived earlier this month. As Retro Gaming With Deadfred discusses in the video below, the R39 Max actually contains the motherboard of an R36S Plus.

Consequently, the R39 Max leverages Rockchip's RK3326 chipset with four ARM Cortex-A35 GPU cores, 1 GB of RAM and a 3,500 mAh battery. On top of that, the device features a 4-inch IPS display running at 720p with a 1:1 aspect ratio, as well as EmuELEC based on Linux. Currently, the R39 Max can be picked up in multiple colours for around $40. Please see the Retro Gaming With Deadfred below for an in-depth look at the latest R36S Plus re-brand.
