MWC 2023 | Qualcomm Snapdragon Auto 5G Modem-RF Gen 2 launches with potentially enhanced connectivity for next-gen cars
Qualcomm asserts that the era of the 5G car is truly here with the advent of the Snapdragon Auto 5G Modem-RF Gen 2. Furthermore, much like its latest chipset for the mobile devices that might sync up with them in the future that has also debuted at MWC 2023, it confers satellite connectivity on its target vehicles.
This latest addition to the Snapdragon Digital Chassis portfolio boosts automotive mobile data with a bandwidth of up to 200MHz and in-car data routing of up to 1Gb/s. These specs are touted to boost reliability while squashing latency in the connected car, and might make for smoother streaming or gaming for passengers while on the road.
The Gen 2 is also not just a modem, as it also integrates its own quad-core CPU, which might contribute to advanced autonomous driving as well as increasingly entertainment- or smart traffic-related automotive applications.
Nevertheless, the new module is of course mainly directed at the purposes of conferring up-to-date 3GPP Release 16-compliant 5G on next-gen cars. Qualcomm has announced that it is working with networks and providers such as LG Innotek, Valeo, WNC, Rolling Wireless and JOYNEXT to provide the technology and infrastructure necessary to make the new Modem's applications more of an everyday reality as time goes on.
