It has been more than 2 years since Panic released Playdate, the quirky yellow-colored handheld with a monochrome screen and a crank. Like some phone manufacturers, Panic doesn't ship the handheld with a charger, and while any USB charger will do, Panic has now released its own charging adapter for the Playdate.
The Playdate ships in a flat yellow box, and from the thickness, it is obvious a charger isn't included. However, buyers do get a matching yellow USB-A to USB-C cable for charging the device or connecting it to a computer. To match the device and charging cable, Panic has released a charging brick in the same yellow color.
The charging brick is a small rectangular box with a 10W power output, a NEMA Type 1 plug (for North America and Japan) and a USB-A port at the top. While a USB-C port would have been nice, Panic's decision to go with USB-A makes sense since it ships the Playdate with a USB-A cable.
The Playdate AC adapter is dirt cheap at just $5, and you can purchase it along with an extra USB cable for the same $5 price. Panic is offering a 1 year warranty on the charger. Delivery within the USA takes about a week while international orders take between 2 to 4 weeks.
