RPCS3 team shares why the PS3 emulator won't land on Android and iOS anytime soon
There are not many PS3 emulators out there, and among the ones that are available, RPCS3 is regarded as the very best by many. The developers behind the emulator have just announced the availability of the app's port for ARM-based Windows, MacOS, and Linux devices.
This expands the compatibility of the PS3 emulator, as it was previously only available for x64 systems. Support for ARM devices naturally means that the iOS or Android port is on the way, but the developers say otherwise. With the announcement, the team shared that they don't plan to port the app to mobile right now.
If you're wondering why, a couple of reasons are keeping the developers from moving forward with the smartphone ports. The developer of RPCS3 cites community issues that other Android emulators have faced. Take the AetherSX2 PS2 emulator, for example. The lone developer behind it had to stop the project due to "death threats" received from the "toxic users."
Then, there are people who are redistributing modified versions of emulators while ignoring the open-source licenses. The RPCS3 developers talked about how ineffective Google is in dealing with these modified versions that disguise themselves as emulators but are straight-up malware.
Of course, this doesn't mean that the RPCS3 developers are fully taking the Android and iOS ports off the table. However, at the current stage, it seems that these mobile ports are a long time away from now, which is a bummer. Recently released top-end phones are more than capable of emulating PS3 games. As a matter of fact, Snapdragon 8 Elite flagships are even making it to the headlines for being able to emulate modern AAA games through PC emulators.
