Philips Hue has released a new MR16 Transformer accessory in Europe. It is designed for the Philips Hue MR16 bulbs (2-pack curr. $99.98 at Amazon), which were released in 2023. These bulbs are typically used to replace older spotlight setups which had halogen bulbs.
The Philips Hue MR16 Transformer is used to convert your home’s 230V electricity to a lower voltage; the MR16 bulbs run on 12V. The accessory is said to be EMI-compliant, with an expected lifetime of 40,000 hours and a three year warranty. This beige colored product measures 2.9 x 11.5 x 4.5 cm (~1.1 x 4.5 x 1.8 inches), has an IP20 rating and will operate in temperatures between -20 to 50°C (-4 and 122°F).
MR16 bulbs differ from the GU10 bulbs as they have a GU5.3 type base. According to Philips Hue, its MR16 bulbs match the brightness of a 35W halogen bulb, but offer dimmable white and colored lighting. It is worth noting that the Philips Hue product is said to be compatible with most transformers from other brands; a complete list can be found on the company’s website.
The Philips Hue MR16 transformer is currently available at the brand’s online stores in European countries like the UK and Spain for £84.99/€99.99. This makes it a relatively expensive product in this region. It is also listed in the Netherlands and Germany, though it is ‘temporarily out of stock’ in these markets. Whether or when a version for the US could arrive remains to be seen.
