Updated | Philips Hue: Friends of Hue smart light switches gain new features
According to users, new features are rolling out to Friends of Hue smart light switches. Earlier this year, we reported on rumors of this update, which suggested third-party accessories for Philips Hue smart lights would soon gain features like the natural light scene. Hueblog.com said its readers had informed it that the update was underway.
The release brings tools already available to Philips Hue products to third-party devices like the Lutron Aurora Smart Bulb Dimmer Switch. As predicted, this includes the natural light scene, allowing you to trigger a schedule that adjusts your smart lights' colour and brightness based on the time of day. Other improvements include ten timeslots and enhanced dimming. Plus, you can now have up to ten scenes in your scene cycle and configure single, double and long presses.
The update appears to be linked to the new Hue Bridge software version 1963171020, which rolled out on March 28th. However, the release notes do not mention the latest features for Friends of Hue switches; instead, a fix for a DNS configuration issue and enhanced system stability are listed. Users have said that they received an in-app notification of the additional functionality. It is unclear whether this update is already available for all Friends of Hue devices or if it is rolling out in phases.
Update: The change log for the Philips Hue app update version 5.14.0, released on April 2nd, mentions these new features. It says “Friends of Hue switches got smarter: You can now use Time-based light, Scene cycle mode, the Natural light scene, and more”.
