PC monitor reviewer advices users to ditch IPS monitors for OLED gaming monitors

When OLED gaming monitors first started appearing en masse, they were out of reach of most gamers. Not only were these monitors quite expensive, but there were also serious concerns regarding their longevity due to image retention and burn-in concerns. OLED gaming monitors have now come a long way, and these issues largely seem to be behind us.

In fact, Monitor’s Unboxed, one of the biggest channels that reviews gaming monitors on YouTube, now recommends choosing an OLED monitor over an IPS panel. MU gave this recommendation as a response to a user asking whether someon should replace a high-end IPS monitor with an OLED gaming monitor.

MU’s main reasons for the recommendation are based on the fact that high-end 2K/4K OLED gaming monitors have come down in price. Moreover, the market is now full of OLED options at virtually all budgets.

For instance, if you can only spend around $350, you can get a 240 Hz 2K QD-OLED monitor from AOC at the time of writing. Bump the budget up to $599, and you can get a 500 Hz 2K QD-OLED monitor from Innocn. 4K options cost more.

That said, IPS monitors are still quite a bit cheaper than competing OLED options. For instance, a 27-inch AOC 2K IPS gaming monitor with a 280 Hz refresh rate can be found for under $200. So, OLED panels still need to come down in price a lot to match the affordability of IPS panels.

Finally, MU cautions users that, while OLED monitors are great for gaming and mixed usage, they are still not ideal as purely work panels. MU’s testing has repeatedly shown that modern OLED’s can contend quite well with burn-in, but static images displayed long enough can still cause image retention artefacts.
