Orange Pi Watch D Pro: New smartwatch supposedly measures blood sugar and blood pressure with the precision of a medical device
Orange Pi is a hardware brand name that is already well-known for various single-board computers, which are also alternatives to the Raspberry Pi. However, the company's portfolio has undergone some diversification of late. For example, a gaming handheld has been announced.
At a recent developer conference, the company also announced, or rather teased, its own smartwatch. The information available is still relatively meager, but Orange Pi has already made some ambitious claims about the performance of the optical sensor technology in its upcoming smartwatch, the Orange Pi Watch D Pro.
For example, it will not only be able to measure heart rate, as is now quite common, but will also be able to monitor blood pressure and blood sugar levels. In principle, i.e., from a scientific point of view, this is entirely conceivable due to the interplay between blood sugar and electromagnetic radiation, but accurate measurements of this would nevertheless be a real breakthrough and would make the company a globally sought-after supplier of medical products virtually overnight.
Orange Pi also claims that the measurement results in idle mode will be precise enough for certification as a medical device. These statements should naturally be viewed with a large dose of skepticism; we recently discovered a non-functioning measurement feature on smartwatch that was also very ambitiously advertised. Samsung smartwatches, on the other hand, already offer blood pressure measurement with calibration support.
Photos reveal the Orange Pi Watch D to be a round smartwatch with a crown and a stylish or at least inconspicuous visual design.
