Reviews for the OnePlus 8

88.4% OnePlus 8 in Review: Great smartphone even in the non-pro version | Notebookcheck
With the OnePlus 8, another good, affordable 5G smartphone has entered the market. While the coverage is still fairly limited, there are many good reasons for purchasing this smartphone. In our review, we will go into what those reasons are.
100% OnePlus 8 review: Faultless flagship killer drops in price
Source: Expert Reviews English
I’ll be the first to admit that I prematurely dismissed the OnePlus 8 in my briefing call. Rather than adding new features, OnePlus would alternately increase the cost by £50 and launch a near-carbon copy of last year’s model. Alarm bells immediately went off. Fixing the problems of last year’s phone, while simultaneously improving almost every aspect, the OnePlus 8 instead demonstrates that a twice-yearly phone launch doesn’t need to add new features to be worthy of admiration. Excelling in all areas, a simple case of refinement is perhaps the best strategy of all.

The realme 8 5G has a pretty solid set of features and, if you’re part of their community that’s been waiting to pull the trigger on a 5G ready phone, this could be the upgrade that you’ve been waiting for. Of course, there’s more testing to be done to see if it’s up to snuff so you may want to stay tuned to the website in the next few days for the full review.

The OnePlus 8 sets the bar high for mid-priced flagships in 2020. While its design refinements borrow elements from other flagships, it's an undeniably sleek phone, with waterfall display edges and a punch-hole for the front-facing camera. With a Snapdragon 865 and up to 12GB of RAM, the phone is high-performance despite costing notably less than most flagships, making it the cheapest 5G phone in many markets.

I conducted battery tests on continuous video playback on Airplane mode. The 4,300-mAh battery inside the OnePlus 8 ran for an average of 18 hours, 48 minutes on both its 90Hz and 60Hz screen setting (because the video I played was shot in 30fps, it makes sense that the times were close). By comparison, the 8 Pro's 4,510-mAh battery clocked in 18 hours, 52 minutes. I'll update this piece with final results and ratings when we finish running streaming video tests.

The OnePlus 8, unfortunately, follows the recent trend of the smartphone industry when it comes to having higher prices. It was released last April 14, 2020 with the base model starting with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Going a step higher, users can get the version that comes packed with 12GB of ram and 256GB of storage.

Of the two flagship phones OnePlus announced in April, the OnePlus 8 isn't just more affordable than the OnePlus 8 Pro, it's also the phone I prefer. At $699 (£599) for 128GB of storage and $799 (£699) for 256GB, the OnePlus 8 is available to buy in the US at T-Mobile and, for the first time ever, Verizon; and it will work on other carriers (OnePlus and Amazon will sell it unlocked, as well). Note that Verizon is selling it at a higher price of $799 (128GB). (The newer OnePlus Nord is an even cheaper option, but it's not available in the US.)

And while the excellent display on the OnePlus 8 won't have users feeling short-changed, the better performing cameras on the OnePlus 8 Pro just might.

OnePlus 8 Audio review
Source: DxOMark English Archive.org version
The OnePlus 8 does an above-average job of handling audio compared to the devices we’ve tested. In particular, its recording performance is well above that of the 8 Pro and the Galaxy S20+, the two phones we most closely compared it with. Its wide sound stage is helpful for providing immersive audio experiences. Overall it performs comparably to other value-priced flagship phones, although it isn’t in our top bracket of audio performers.

OnePlus 8 is a phone worth buying. Like totally. Except the camera performance, which is not as good as that of the OnePlus 8 Pro, I don’t find the OnePlus 8 in any significant way inferior to the OnePlus 8 Pro. And OnePlus 8 Pro retails for Rs 54,999. In terms of performance, software, design, battery life the OnePlus 8 is as good as any other phone, including some more expensive phones. I wish OnePlus, instead of putting three rear cameras in the OnePlus 8, had done what Apple had done with the iPhone SE and had put one but top class camera into the OnePlus 8. That would have made the OnePlus 8 a complete phone for lot of consumers. But even without that, I don’t hesitate to recommend OnePlus 8 to anyone looking to get a phone for less than Rs 45,000. At its price, the OnePlus 8 is a superb and reliable phone.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea for the brand to rethink the OnePlus 8’s pricing here, though it's supposed to be cheaper in India already, compared to other markets. That is unless they want to drive potential buyers towards the OnePlus 8 Pro, which actually offers more premium features in the 50K+ budget. To sum it up, the OnePlus 8 is undoubtedly a good phone, but not necessarily the best value for money option at its current selling price.

Starting at Rs 41,999, the OnePlus 8 is one of the expensive smartphones with Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. At RM2899 for the base model, and considering the options out there, recommending the OnePlus 8 can be a little difficult. Frankly speaking, using the phone reminded me a lot of the OnePlus 7 Pro I reviewed last year. Colour quirks aside, the OnePlus 8 is a fantastic flagship smartphone at an amazing price. You rarely get this quality level of design, features and performance at such good value. OnePlus 8 review: Android's mid-range champ has less bang for more bucks
Source: Good Gear Guide English Archive.org version
The OnePlus 8 is caught between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, it’s $200 cheaper than the OnePlus 8 Pro, which makes it a compelling option for someone on a bit of a budget. On the other hand, it’s $200 more than the recently reduced OnePlus 7T, with a starting price that’s higher than last year’s OnePlus 7 Pro.

Hands On with the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro

I called out a few negatives above, but on balance, I like the OnePlus 8 series. They nail a lot of fundamentals. It's a great physical design, the screens are great, and of course the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset delivers blazing performance on both models. I'm impatient, and these phones never kept me waiting. I've been happy with battery life. These phones are competitive, and a good value.

The OnePlus 8 5G is one of the most anticipated phones of the year. With their history of fairly priced smartphones the OnePlus 8 5G provides a lot of bang for the buck. And now comes in 2 different colors. The Onyx Black and Interstellar Glow. We'll be taking an up close look at both colors today, and even dropping a OnePlus 8 5G in water to see if it'll still work.

The OnePlus 8 is a fantastic performer, with a camera that lags behind the competition just slightly enough for it to not be considered a major drawback. If you are looking for a new phone — it’s a solid offer. If you are thinking about upgrading from a 2019 OnePlus 7 or a Galaxy S10 — eh… keep your old phone.

Normally, I'm a big advocate of opting for the less expensive of the multiple models that phone makers put out. Plus and Pro models have flashy features that appeal to power users, but rarely justify the added cost for most smartphone owners. And while the excellent display on the OnePlus 8 won't have users feeling short-changed, the better performing cameras on the OnePlus 8 Pro just might.

The OnePlus 8 is a seven hundred dollar smartphone that you’ll be able to purchase from OnePlus starting on April 29, 2020. This device will cost you approximately $58/mo for 12 months if you buy it from OnePlus online (working with Affirm for monthly payments), or $116.50 per month for 6 months.

So this time around, it's hard to say for sure whether the OnePlus 8 is worth your money. As you can see, it depends on the market, and it depends on what you are after. But putting the software aside, in markets outside of China and India, there might be more sensible options for the price. Better yet, if 5G isn't on top of your list of priorities, getting your hands on a 7T or 7T Pro still hanging on a shelf somewhere might be the best way to go. And if going up the price ladder is an option, 8 Pro or any other flagship for the price will serve you better in the long run.

OnePlus 8 Series | Cheaper in India, Pricier in the United States
Source: Exhibit.tech English Archive.org version
OnePlus 8 Pro price in India has been revealed, alongside the prices for the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z headphones. OnePlus on Sunday announced the pricing for all of its new products, just days after their introduction. The exact sale dates for each of the products is still unclear and OnePlus has just said that these will go on sale next month. The OnePlus 8 series prices in India are much lower than the prices of the two smartphones in the US. What’s also worth noting is that the company has launched a brand new variant of the OnePlus 8 in India – the 6GB + 128GB – that hasn’t been unveiled globally. In other respects, outside a bit of curved glass here, a new processor there, the OnePlus 8 doesn’t seem a big improvement over the OnePlus 7T. But when 5G phones current as effective wallet-drainers as Western Union email scams, we’re going to chalk this one up as a win.

My gut instinct is just telling me to tell you to buy this phone. It starts at $699 and has a ton of great features. If it weren’t for an ever-so-slightly inconsistent camera, I’d already be calling it POTY (phone of the year). However, it’s only April, so for now, I will restrain myself and just say that the OnePlus 8 is easily POTY material.

OnePlus 8 Review: Dying A Hero
Source: MrMobile English Archive.org version
OnePlus is a smartphone maker with a cool story. It started out by appealing to buyers who were price-conscious, yes, but more importantly: phone geeks. So OnePlus phones have always been fast and buffed up by a few cherry-picked features that actually make them more useful. At the same time, OnePlus has mostly resisted adding extraneous bloatware that doesn’t improve the experience. The result has been years of products that I could recommend not just to fellow nerds, but to normal people who just wanted a really solid phone at a fair price. The OnePlus 8 doesn’t betray that legacy, but it also doesn’t do much to push it forward. For that you need to look to the OnePlus 8 Pro, but then you’re jumping to a $900 phone. The OnePlus 8 here? A buck under $700. That's more in line with the company's traditional year-over-year price hikes, but it's still more expensive than ever. With competition like the Pixel 3a selling for less than half the price, does the OnePlus 8 stand a chance even though it's about to be on more shelves than ever? Find out in my OnePlus 8 Review!

OnePlus 8 announcement in under 10 minutes
Source: Engadget English Archive.org version
Alright, we're only 2 seconds under, but there's a lot of news here. OnePlus announced the 8 and the 8 Pro, with the pro version featuring maybe the company's first true set of flagship specs, with fast storage, a top line Snapdragon 865 chipset, multiple cameras, wireless charging, and an IP68 waterproof rating. Unfortunately, for a company built on great value phones, this also comes with flagship prices, with the 256GB OnePlus 8 Pro retailing for $999.

OnePlus didn't change much from the 7T, but it didn't need to. You get fresh hardware design and a bump in specs, plus 5G, with the same great basics: a really good display, strong battery life, consistent camera performance and amazing software. You just have to deal with the fact that OnePlus is charging $100 more than it did 6 months ago.

Sure, it's pricier than its predecessors, but this handset continues to deliver a flagship experience that costs hundreds less than an equivalent from most others. Colour quirks aside, the OnePlus 8 is a fantastic flagship smartphone at an amazing price. You rarely get this quality level of design, features and performance at such good value. When the biggest let down is that the main camera can do a better job of close-ups than the macro lens, you know you have an excellent phone. The main thing is whether the Pro is enough to tempt you to splash out.

The OnePlus 8 sets the bar high for budget flagships in 2020.

Qualcomm Adreno 650: Graphics chip for smartphones and tablets that is integrated within the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. Qualcomm claims that it is 25% faster than the Adreno 640 in the Snapdragon 855 SoC and offers 50% more compute units (ALUs). For Android it should be one of the fastest graphics cards in 2020.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

SD 865: High-end SoC for smartphones that was introduced in late 2019 and manufactured in 7 nm at TSMC (improved N7P). Integrates one “Prime Core” based on a ARM Cortex-A77 architecture clocked at up to 2.84 GHz. Three more performance cores are also based on the A77 but clock up to 2.42 GHz. Furthermore, four energy saving cores are integrated that are based on the ARM Cortex-A55 architecture and clock at up to 1.8 GHz. In addition to the processor cores, the SoC integrates a WiFi 6 modem (including 60 GHz mmWave support), a Hexagon 698 DSP (up to 15 TOPS) and a Spectra 480 ISP. The integrated memory controller now supports faster LPDDR5 memory with up to 2,750 MHz.
