Following a successful collaboration with Ray-Ban, Meta is expanding its range of smart glasses with a model developed jointly with Oakley. The result is a smart pair of glasses that comes in a total of five different designs and offers a number of technical improvements over the older Ray-Ban model.
The glasses are also available as sunglasses or prescription glasses, for which Oakley charges an additional fee. Integrated microphones and speakers are installed. Once connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth, users can communicate directly with an AI voice assistant or play music or podcasts via the speakers at the temples. Thanks to the front-facing camera, the glasses can also answer questions about objects in the real world or translate printed text.
A new feature is that the camera can record videos in 3K instead of just 1,080p. The glasses are IPX4 certified and so should be able to withstand rain, but are not completely waterproof. Meta has doubled the battery life to eight hours of use; when used with the included charging case, a runtime of up to 48 hours is said to be possible.
Price and availability
The first model, the Oakley Meta HSTN, is expected to launch on July 11 at a price of $499, with additional models expected to follow later this summer, starting at $399.
