The popular Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses now have new competition: HTC has just announced the Vive Eagle, a pair of smart glasses with a partially transparent plastic frame available in red, brown, gray or black. The lenses come from Zeiss, although the Vive Eagle will initially only be available as sunglasses with UV protection, with model variants featuring optical lenses to follow later.
Four microphones and integrated speakers allow for communication with the glasses, which can optionally access Google Gemini or ChatGPT. Music can be played back and photos/videos taken via the integrated 12-MP ultra-wide-angle camera. Above all, the camera is primarily intended to enable the AI chatbot to interact with the real world, including translating texts or answering questions about objects in the field of vision. In addition to voice commands, users can also take photos using a camera shutter button.
HTC installs a Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 processor, 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of flash storage, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. The energy-efficient AR chip and a 235 mAh battery are said to provide a battery life of three hours for phone calls, 4.5 hours for video playback, or 36 hours in standby mode. IP54 certification promises protection against light rain. Weighing just 48.8 grams, the glasses are designed to be very comfortable to wear.
Price and availability
The HTC Vive Eagle AR headset will be available in Taiwan for 15,600 TWD (approximately $520). Details on an international launch are pending. Further information can be found on the official product page.
