“No, please delay”: Why many gamers don’t want a PS6 yet

Apparently, not even Sony knows exactly when the PlayStation 6 will launch. That emerged from a recent Wall Street Journal interview with Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki, which we have already reported on. The information has also made its way to Reddit – where it has sparked a major discussion.
There is little disappointment over the uncertain release window for the PS6. Instead, fans are asking a different question: “Did anybody really want the PS6 to come out next year anyway?” asks u/songsinger72 in the top comment of the thread. The user adds that they “don’t feel like the potential of the current generation has been fully tapped yet.”
The PS5 generation doesn’t feel anywhere near over yet
Many others in the community seem to share that view.Comments such as “No, please delay” and “I actively want it to not come out” appear repeatedly throughout the thread. Many users say they would be perfectly happy to wait until 2030 or even longer for the PS6. One frequently cited reason is the lengthy cross-gen period. Many major games continued to launch on PS4 for years after the PlayStation 5 (currently $650 on Amazon) arrived. Now that the PS4 has largely run its course, it feels to many as though the PS5 is only just starting to hit its stride.
From a technical standpoint, many Redditors also see little urgent need for a new console right now. The PS5 is considered powerful enough, while the graphical leaps between console generations are becoming increasingly smaller anyway. Without clearly noticeable improvements, many gamers would see the PS6 as little more than an expensive performance upgrade. Another crucial factor is price. Given the rising cost of hardware, fans expect the PlayStation 6 could cost around $1,000.
End of discs could further dampen excitement
How much the announced move away from physical games is affecting sentiment is difficult to gauge, however. Numerous comments criticize the prospect of an all-digital PS6 and the potential loss of backward compatibility with discs. Without this controversial direction, Sony’s next console might be more appealing – and perhaps more fans would be pushing for an earlier release.
