Fire Emblem Shadows is an unexpected Nintendo mobile game now downloadable on smartphones. Players must use social deduction to reveal who on their team is a friend or foe. Nintendo’s latest Fire Emblem game is part of a wider effort to appeal to gamers on the go.

Fire Emblem fans received a shock when Nintendo announced a mobile game without warning. Most titles employ tactical RPG mechanics, but Fire Emblem Shadows puts an emphasis on social deduction. Players can now download the free game on Android and iOS devices, with microtransactions optional.

The news about Fire Emblem Shadows came through a press release that’s sparse on details. However, there is now a two-minute trailer in the Nintendo Today! app that explains its concept. Players compete in teams of three, electing to be a disciple of light or a disciple of shadow. Gamers must vote to determine who on the squad is a traitor. Correctly or incorrectly identifying the deviant will influence subsequent battles.

Initial impressions describe simplified gameplay, where characters auto-fight and move without instructions. Players do have some options with what weapons to use and who to target with magic spells. Still, the more surprising social deduction elements take cues from titles like Among Us.

More Nintendo mobile games may be coming

Although Fire Emblem Shadows arrived without fanfare, Nintendo has pledged to invest more in mobile games. Earlier in 2025, the company’s President, Shuntaro Furukawa, described a desire to expand its reach beyond consoles like the Switch 2. Notable past titles include the 2024 Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete and the 2017 Fire Emblem Heroes. With apps like Nintendo Today!, it’s also made news and content more accessible to smartphone users.

Players who prefer traditional Fire Emblem games can look forward to a new Switch 2 release in 2026. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave will build on Three Houses, with combat arts returning to enhance the turn-based action.

Fire Emblem Shadows, a smart device game
introducing a new style of battles featuring
role-playing and social deduction, available today

Nintendo Co., Ltd. (HQ: Kyoto, Minami-ku, Japan; Representative Director and President: Shuntaro Furukawa, “Nintendo” hereafter) announced the release of Fire Emblem Shadows, a smart device game that serves as a spin-off of the Fire Emblem series and introduces a new style of battles featuring role-playing and social deduction. The game will be available starting today, September 25, 2025.

Fire Emblem Shadows

The gameplay of Fire Emblem Shadows combines real-time strategy and social deduction.
One of the three allies participating in each battle is secretly a treacherous disciple of shadow. Players choose to take on the role of either a disciple of light, aiming to find their way through the labyrinth, or a disciple of shadow.

After the initial battle, players vote to determine who they believe is the treacherous disciple of shadow. The outcome of the vote affects whether the next battle is more favorable or more challenging. Whether the disciples of light can correctly discover the traitor—or the disciple of shadow can successfully deceive the others—holds the key to how the next battle unfolds.
