Metal Eden is pitched as an "adrenaline-rush sci-fi FPS," that combines elements of genre-defining games, like the parkour and mobility from Mirror's Edge and Ghostrunner, the fast-paced action and gunplay from Doom, and even a version of Metroid's Morph Ball. Metal Eden is set in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi world filled to the brim with cyberpunk aesthetics, monsters, and high-tech weapons, and the game is set to a meaty dub-step-infused soundtrack.
The single-player game centres on a campaign that drops players into a suicide mission to rescue a group of survivors who have been trapped in an orbital city that was meant to be humanity's last bastion. Similarly to Ghostrunner, players take control of a soldier — Hyper Unit Aksa — with enhanced cybernetic abilities and heightened mobility. Fighting and navigation include everything from wall-running and dashing to grappling, jetpack flying, and vaulting over obstacles.
Given the focus on gunplay in Metal Eden, it's no suprise that the weapons are varied, with everything from different gun types to elemental effects, and beyond. Clearly taking inspiration from Metroid, when foes get tough, Aksa can transform into what the game's dev calls an "Armored Ramball" to take on heavy enemy units.
Metal Eden fully launches on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 (curr. $399.99 at Best Buy) on May 6, 2025, but there is a free-to-play demo available on Steam. The makers of Metal Eden have also partnered with Speedrun.com to host a challenge with a $1,000 prize for the player who manages to complete the demo in the fastest time possible.
