Sam Barlow’s Her Story is an award-winning interactive crime mystery, and it's now available for just $0.99 on Steam - a steep 90% discount from its usual $9.99 price tag. Granted, the game has hit this price before, but regardless, this is still its lowest price ever on the platform, with the offer valid until April 15.
Released in 2015, Her Story became an instant standout due to its unconventional format. Players sit in front of a retro-style computer terminal, searching through a police video archive. The game provides no set path - just a search bar, a scattered set of interview clips, and the freedom to dig for clues however you see fit. The goal is to piece together the mystery surrounding a woman whose husband has gone missing.
The game’s structure is intentionally disjointed, which encourages players to draw their own conclusions from fragments of testimony. Some players have praised it as one of the most immersive storytelling experiments in gaming, while others don't necessarily agree, stating that the ending isn’t for everyone. Still, with over 9,000 "Very Positive" user reviews and an average rating of 87%, it clearly struck a chord.
Moreover, critics also backed the game. PC Gamer, The Guardian, and Rock Paper Shotgun called it one of the most innovative uses of FMV in games to date. The amalgam of strong acting, non-linear structure, and minimalist design helped Her Story win multiple Game of the Year awards back in 2015.
You don’t need a high-end rig either - minimum specs ask for just 2 GB RAM and 512 MB of GPU memory, making it easily playable on older systems. Whether you end up uncovering the full story or walk away with more questions than answers, there’s not much to lose for a dollar. The game trailer is available below.
