Every year rumors circulate that either Sony Mobile will be mothballed or the Xperia line will be retired (at least in name). The last few years have certainly indicated such, with Sony Mobile going from releasing seven Xperia-branded phones in 2021 to just two in 2024: The Xperia 1 VI and the Xperia 10 VI (curr. available on Amazon). But a known tipster has offered some hope for fans concerned about what 2025 may bring, with the simple confirmation that “there will be an Xperia 1 VII”.
The source of this statement, Ricciolo, is not exactly a heavyweight of the smartphone-leaking world, with only 1,702 followers on X at the time of writing. However, the tipster has offered up accurate details about phones in the past, including about Xperia devices. It is worth pointing out that Ricciolo also stated “Xperia news incoming” in early January and then went quiet, so it’s possible information was still fluctuating in regard to the Xperia 1 VII production process.
Although this seems to be nothing more than an affirmation of both the Xperia name itself and the existence of the 2025 phone, it is still worth being skeptical about any Sony Xperia 1 VII rumors at this point. For instance, a “leak” that has turned up recently claims to show design drawings of the Mark 7 model of the Xperia 1 with a very curious camera layout; however, these images (see below) were first shared online back in July 2024 and came from a “source” on Weibo that currently has no posts and very few followers.
