A new rumor about the Sony Xperia 1 VII has surfaced, allegedly via the Chinese social media platform Weibo. The source, who has previously made multiple claims about the future Xperia flagship smartphone, has now indicated the possibility of a specific camera-related upgrade. Instead of having an Exmor T sensor joined by two Exmor RS sensors, like the Xperia 1 VI (curr. available on Amazon), the 2025 iteration could come with three Exmor T sensors for the three rear-facing cameras.
The Exmor T sensor was introduced with the Sony Xperia 1 V in 2023. It delivered improvements over the Exmor RS in low-light conditions, with the newer sensor apparently being much more capable at reducing image noise than its predecessor while offering picture quality that was “twice as good” according to Sony. Replacing the Exmor RS sensors used for the telephoto and ultra-wide cameras with Exmor T sensors would certainly enhance the photography aspect of the Xperia 1 VII, presuming Sony’s imaging software and processing was up to scratch.
However, the rumor suggests that the size of the sensors will remain the same: 1/3.5 for the telephoto camera and 1/2.5 for the ultra-wide camera. It’s important to keep in mind that this supposed information for the Sony Xperia 1 VII comes from the same source who claimed back in January that “only one sensor has changed”, whereas this latest rumor states two may change. But at least it is a believable rumor, with Sony having the opportunity to show off a flagship phone chockful of its innovative Exmor T sensors.
