Some purported battery details for the likely Sony Xperia 1 VII have been posted, and anyone hoping for a larger battery for the 2025 device is going to be disappointed. According to the mysterious Weibo-based source, it appears the Xperia 1 VII, or whatever Sony will call its 2025 flagship, will come with a 5,000-mAh battery capacity. That would make it the same size as the battery found in the Xperia 1 IV, Xperia 1 V, and Xperia 1 VI.
A 5,000-mAh battery capacity for the Sony Xperia 1 VII is not a bad thing in itself, as current flagship smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra sport a battery with the same capacity. The disappointing aspect for some will be the lack of change between iterations; it is even alleged that the charging speed will not be altered. As reported before, tipsters seem to believe that the Xperia 1 VII might just be Sony going through the motions rather than surprising or innovating.
However, according to the source, the Xperia 1 VII battery will have a new shape. There are a couple of reasons why this could be the case, and both are actually potentially exciting. Sony might have overhauled the design for the Xperia 1 line, which would be a huge departure for the brand, or a new battery shape might be required for a considerable change to the innards.
As can be seen in a teardown video of the Sony Xperia 1 VI (posted below), the battery takes up a huge amount of interior space. If Sony has chosen a different shape for the cell, perhaps a smaller physical size, then that could mean more room for some interesting component upgrades or even a major camera overhaul – something that would make the Xperia 1 line exciting again.
