New Nothing Phone (2a) details surface with redesign and MediaTek Dimensity chipset inbound
Dylan Roussel has shared new details about a potential new Nothing smartphone. For reference, said smartphone would be Nothing's third after the Phone (2) that it released over the summer (curr. $649 on Amazon). Aligning with previous rumours, Roussel alleges that the next Nothing smartphone is being developed under the model number 'A142', which has also been seen as 'AIN142', likely an Indian variant.
Additionally, Roussel claims that A142 is linked to the codenames 'Pacman' and 'Aero' or 'Aerodactyl', should these ever emerge in subsequent leaks. Moreover, the same Android app developer has published a first look of sorts at A142, which he states Nothing will sell as the Phone (2a). Surprisingly, the device will sport a new design language, with three Glyph elements surrounding a circular camera housing.
While two rear-facing cameras remain like on the Phone (1) and Phone (2), these are now horizontally orientated and moved to the centre of the device's back panel. Seemingly, the Nothing Phone (2a) will retain Nothing's trademark translucent back panel though, given the ability to see a wide cable snaking its way from its bottom edge to near its camera housing.
Purportedly, Nothing is developing the Phone (2a) around the Dimensity 7200, a 4 nm TSMC SoC that MediaTek announced in February 2023. In summary, the Dimensity 7200 combines two ARM Cortex-A715 and six Cortex-A510 CPU cores with a Mali-G610 MC4 GPU. For context, the Dimensity 7200 is already available in the Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus, cementing the Nothing Phone (2a) as a mid-range handset. Currently, Roussel is operating under the assumption that Nothing will present the Phone (2a) during MWC 2024, following the company's confirmation that it would host a 'Nothing to see' event during next year's Barcelona-based conference.
