Casio’s new Pro Trek PRW-61D-2 gets a sapphire crystal, upgraded lume, and a dial inspired by Japan’s "Dragon Eye" phenomenon. It is equipped with the Triple Sensor suite, Tough Solar, and Multi Band 6, with pricing expected around $500.

Casio is now adding a brand-new watch to its revered Pro Trek lineup - PRW-61D-2 - and this one has more visual storytelling than usual. The watch is based on the pre-existing PRW-61 platform, but gets a new dial and bezel treatment inspired by a natural phenomenon in Japan.

The PRW-61D-2 sits at the higher end of the Pro Trek range and keeps the core feature set intact. That includes Tough Solar charging, Multi Band 6 radio timekeeping, and Casio’s Triple Sensor system covering altimeter, barometer, compass, and thermometer functions. It also keeps standard outdoor watch features like world time, stopwatch, countdown timer, alarms, and 100-meter water resistance.

Its execution is what makes it special. The dial uses a textured pattern designed to resemble melting snow and ice, as a reference to the seasonal "Dragon Eye" formation seen on Mount Hachimantai. This is paired with a deep blue bezel that reflects the ring of water that forms around the phenomenon. The result is a watch that feels more "deliberate" in its theme compared to typical Pro Trek releases, which are more utilitarian.

Casio has also upgraded some of the materials here. The watch uses a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, and the crown is screw-down for improved sealing. The case and caseback are made from bio-based resin.

The strap is worth noting as well. Instead of standard resin, it uses a carbon fiber-reinforced bio-based material, similar to what Casio has used in models like the PRW-B1000. This should offer better rigidity and durability over time. The dial, hands, and indices all feature generous lume application, and the backlight covers both the digital display and analog elements. Based on the visuals alone, nighttime readability looks well above average for this segment.

Pricing is expected to land around $500 when converted from Japan pricing (¥79,200), though for now the watch has only been announced for the Japanese market. A wider release is likely, but not yet confirmed. Sales will begin in May itself.
