Casio's new retro A140WE is a quieter, rounder take on the Vintage series watches

Few watch lines have held their "high-ish price, but justified" power quite like Casio's Retro series. Decades in, it's still a great combination of nostalgia and wearability - and now it's getting a fresh face. Casio has now added the A140WE to its Retro lineup, and it's a more considered refresh than the brand's usual updates. The primary change is the case shape: gone is the strictly rectangular frame that the A168 loyalists love. In its place is a softer, rounded form - 39 × 36.8 × 10.4 mm - that Casio says embodies a "harmonious blend of retro style and contemporary trends." Because of this new design, the watch looks less like a vintage piece and more like a modern reinterpretation of one.
The chrome-plated plastic case comes with a steel bracelet featuring a herringbone-patterned center section and a flat, vertically brushed finish that gives it an unexpectedly premium look at the price point. The sunray dial treatment - where the surface shimmers differently depending on viewing angle - adds a lot more depth to the model, which should help punch it above the ~$70 ask.
Specs are standard Casio fare: 1/100-second stopwatch up to 60 minutes, daily alarm, hourly time signal, EL backlight, 12/24-hour calendar, 7-year battery, and 30m water resistance. Three colorways will launch at release - A140WE-2A in dark blue, A140WE-8A in dark gray, and the gold-toned A140WEG-9A with scratch-resistant IP coating. Sales begin within the coming month - the watches are currently listed on Casio Japan (among other regional websites) for 11,000 JPY (~$70).
