Netflix has launched its new streaming package for the Indian market. This new, super-low price tier only applies to streaming on mobile devices. Furthermore, those who opt for it will only be able to use the app on 1 screen only.
On the other hand, this new plan can work on a tablet rather than a phone, which may attract those who would prefer a larger screen for their new, cost-effective content. It will cost INR 199 (which converts to US$2.88 at present). The plan also restricts the resolution available to 480p (or Standard Definition).
Netflix India has rationalized its new business decision by pointing out that most potential customers in this market are not inclined to spend much on paid content. This is due to the low average income in the country, as well as the ability to access local programmes "for basically free" in any case. The streaming giant has also denied that it plans to extend similar plans to any other market worldwide.
