Google is rolling out Matter support for its Nest Thermostat. The new compatibility will enable you to control the Google device using other Matter-compatible devices and apps, such as Apple Home. The rollout for the 2020 device began on April 18, with the full distribution expected to take several weeks.

Google is rolling out Matter compatibility for its latest Nest Thermostat. The Matter standard enables interconnectivity between otherwise isolated smart home systems. For example, you can now adjust your Google Nest Thermostat using Matter-certified apps like Apple Home. This means that iPhone users can adjust the temperature in their homes via the Apple app rather than downloading the Google Home app.

Google notes that the rollout began on April 18 and could take several weeks to reach all eligible devices. Support for Matter also lets you use Android Fast Pair for Matter, a code-generating tool that helps you to set up new devices faster. Another feature has been developed between Google and Samsung, allowing your Google Home app to see Matter gadgets registered via the SmartThings App on an Android OS smartphone.

Late last year, Matter compatibility rolled out to other Google gadgets, including the Nest Hub Max and Nest Wi-Fi Pro. The newest Nest Thermostat was launched in 2020, with features such as scheduling, HVAC monitoring and Savings Finder, a tool to help you reduce your energy consumption. The Google Nest Thermostat E and the Google Nest Learning Thermostat are not currently Matter compatible; Google told The Verge that it was still exploring this option. Plus, any new Nest devices from Google are expected to ship with Matter support.
