Native and upscaled PlayStation 2 emulation on PS5 nears reality
Star Wars: The Clone Wars, a classic PlayStation 2 title, has appeared on PSDeals, a tracking site that collects unpublished data from the PSN servers. It has drawn the thumbnail and game description, which suggests that the PS2 game will be available to the latest PlayStation 5 console as an emulated download.
This isn't the first time Sony is bringing classic titles to the newer consoles, though. PS4 has received a good number of titles that are available as emulated downloads. But so far, PS5 didn't get any of that PS2 emulation attention. However, as the details of Star Wars: The Clone Wars port have emerged, that could change very soon.
To be precise, as per the game description that the tracking site has collected from PlayStation servers, the emulated port for the 2002 PS2 game is planned for a June 11 release. What's more important is that the description notes that "this title has been converted from the PlayStation 2 version to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles and provides newly added features."
Among the "newly added features" are "up-rendering, rewind, quick save, and custom video filters." Here, up-rendering is a crucial aspect as it means that the classic title will look good on modern high-resolution displays, even if the game has low-resolution textures.
The "rewind, quick save, and custom video filters" are also great as they are improvements that PS2 emulation on PS4 didn't bring before. Of course, they were available on the select PS1 games that Sony and Implicit Conversions ported to PS5, and these ported titles run great on the latest game console.
