PPSSPP is back on Apple's App Store.
The PSP emulator was removed last week. While specifics for its removal were never directly revealed, its speculated that the app's built-in homebrew store was viewed as problematic by Apple. PPSSPP includes access to several home brew applications, which are fan-made games generally released under an open-source license (such as the GNU GPL version 3).
Many think Cave Story, a retro-themed platformer, was the root cause. The game is licensed to Nicalis, a developer that has ported the title to several different platforms. However, Cave Story is still available in the latest version of the emulator, which is once again available on the App Store.
What is even more interesting is that PPSSPP Gold was never taken down. The only difference between PPSSPP Gold and PPSSPP is that PPSSPP Gold requires a purchase of $4.99, which is solely a method of supporting the developer of the emulator. The app itself is a carbon copy of the standard version of PPSSPP, including the included homebrew store.
In addition to its return to the App Store, PPSSPP has a new update. Version 1.17.2 brings support for rendering via Metal (through MoltenVK), swiping left to go back, improved text rendering in the UI, and support for RetroAchievements.
PPSSPP is available for free on the App Store.
