One of the most popular retro game emulators for iOS is about to bring a long-requested feature to its public release.
Delta, a multi-platform emulator for iPhones and iPads, will receive an update to version 1.7 on Monday, March 31st. This version will push Online Multiplayer for the Nintendo DS core (aka DS Online Multiplayer) to the public version.
Currently, DS Online Multiplayer is available only through a Patreon subscription, which allows access to the beta version of Delta. This Patreon-exclusive version also includes a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive core that is not available in the public release.
The update was announced on Bluesky on March 25. Also announced was a free public beta version that included DS Online Multiplayer, available via Apple's Testflight program.
To play DS games with others via Online Multiplayer, users will need to connect to 3rd party servers like Wiimmfi, according to Delta. Nintendo shut down the official online servers for the Nintendo DS over a decade ago, but avid fans still maintain servers for online play, which Delta will now support.
Other updates include improvements to the Nintendo 64 core (mupen64plus) such as fixing mixing textures, allowing custom resolutions and texture packs via a config file, and switching the graphics API to OpenGL ES 3.0. The new version also allows for easier screenshots with a controller, improved support for controller cases like the Gamebaby and PlayCase, and experimental support for RetroAchievements.
You can download Delta on the Apple App Store.
