Flagship smartphones with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC are only now just starting to emerge. However, there are already signs that Qualcomm has released its immediate successor, the Gen 2, to its partners markedly early this year.
Given that this processor has been most recently referred to as the "SM8475", it may be the Snapdragon 888+ to its existing successor's (the SM8450) 888: in other words, an iterative upgrade with relatively minor performance upgrades
Nevertheless, according to a new and specs-rich leak from TechnikNews, Motorola's take on this silicon might result in what may be the flagship from this OEM to hold out for in 2022. This alleged Moto Edge X30 successor is now touted to have a 200MP main camera and a battery capable of charging at up to 125W.
Those specs might sound outlandish compared to even the most powerful top-end phones of right now; however, Motorola has apparently been able to procure Samsung's latest ISOCELL HP1 for this purpose. As for the latter, the leaker Digital Chat Station suggests that it might be one of the most logical next steps up from the 120W upper limit currently boasted by the likes of Xiaomi or iQOO.
This putative late-2022 Motorola flagship may also represent a radical shift in internal code-names, from the geographically-inspired monikers borne by most of its devices to the more simple and potentially fitting frontier in this generation.
It is also now tipped to offer a 6.67-inch OLED display with the Edge X30's 144Hz refresh rate - however, it is also projected to be FHD+ rather than QHD+ as in some other new premium devices, and not to be flat.
Then again, it is also thought to reprise the X30's unusual 60MP selfie camera, and to augment its spec'd-out primary lens with 50MP and 12MP rear shooters. Finally, the "Motorola Frontier" may also be able to offer Android 12, 50W wireless charging, and up to 12GB of RAM to its prospective buyers. Then again, word on its pricing or availability is nowhere to be found at this point.
