Modretro Chromatic tested for sapphire in Game Boy Color-matching screen
The Modretro Chromatic is now available as the "ultimate retro cartridge gaming console" due to its ability to use all the Game Boy- and Game Boy Color-compatible media you might still have around.
Its screen is even the same size and resolution as that of Nintendo's original handheld device, although Modretro claims that its version might attract far fewer scratches due to its "sapphire" screen.
JerryRigEverything host Zach Nelson has taken a break from torturing smartphones as usual to verify that the display does indeed scratch at a level 8 rather than 7 or lower as usual (although the vlogger did not break the gem-tester out to make sure this time around).
The Chromatic also beat the bend test thanks to its "magnesium alloy" shell. It is the same size and shape as that of the original GBC, and was even found to have the authentic tri-wing screws to hold it together.
The new retro gaming platform does indeed seem to do everything the original console did (except for come in translucent purple, although the Anbernic RG35XX as found on Amazon can) - which, unfortunately, includes the need to use AA batteries, as Modretro has yet to release its promised USB-C rechargeable battery.
On that note, other drawbacks include the fact that the internal coin battery necessary to save games needs soldering skills to remove or replace, and the bright, colorful display also can't be repaired on its own with any ease as it is glued to the sapphire cover.
The Chromatic is available to order directly through Modretro for $199/€190.95 at the time of writing.
