Mode 1 Retro II: Affordable flip phone starts running Android with 48 MP camera and two displays
Flip phones have made a comeback in recent years, with the likes of Motorola, Oppo and Samsung moving the market into foldable OLED panels with their Razr, Find N and Galaxy Z Flip series, respectively. However, Japanese company P-UP World has applied modern technology to the flip phone's previous form factor, the popularity of which was maintained in the early 2000s by the Motorola Razr V3 and its various spin offs.
According to the company's product page, the Mode 1 Retro II relies upon the MediaTek Helio G85, a 12 nm chipset with two ARM Cortex-A75 and six Cortex-A5 CPU cores. Additionally, the handset has 4 GB of RAM, a 2,500 mAh battery and dual Nano SIM card slot readers. Moreover, P-UP World includes 64 GB of storage, as well as a MicroSD card reader that supports up to 1 TB cards. Furthermore, the Mode 1 Retro II has a 3.5-inch IPS display that outputs at 720 x 1,440 pixels, which results in a 460 PPI pixel density.
P-UP World has equipped the Mode 1 Retro II with a 48 MP primary camera, a capacitive fingerprint scanner and a set of physical controls that dominate its lower half. The handset has a 13 MP front-facing camera too, along with a small cover display for showing the time. For reference, P-UP World charges JPY 29,800 (~US$199) for the Mode 1 Retro II in Japan; unfortunately, there is no indication that the device will ever receive a global release.
