Microsoft already offers plenty of docking solutions that work across a range of devices. For instance, it has been seeling the Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock (curr. $254.99 on Amazon) for almost two years at this point. While that accessory still remains available, the company has now introduced an alternative that is almost 50% lighter than its Thunderbolt 4 counterpart.
Specifically, the Surface USB4 Dock weighs 206 g, compared to 410 g for the Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock. The former also measures 120 x 60 x 15 mm, which should make it noticeably smaller than the Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock at 150 x 75 x 21.3 mm. The Surface USB4 Dock drops a few ports to hit its more compact footprint though, such as a 3.5 mm jack. According to Microsoft, its new dock features the following I/O:
- 1x Gigabit Ethernet
- 1x Kensington lock slot
- 1x HDMI 2.1
- 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A (7.5 W)
- 1x USB Type-C (PSU only)
- 2x USB4 Gen 3 (40 Gbps)
The Surface USB4 Dock provides up to 65 W of power to a connected device, although it ships with a 100 W PSU that Microsoft will not sell separately. Other features include MAC address passthrough and Wake on LAN from Modern Standby S4 or S5 sleep modes. The Surface USB4 Dock is available today for $199.99 and will begin shipping on February 18.
