Roland Quandt has delivered various insights into Microsoft's next Surface Laptop before its release on May 6. To recap, while the company confirmed the date of its next Surface launch earlier this week, rumours about the company having created a more compact Surface Laptop appeared earlier this year. Incidentally, information about a new Surface Pro has emerged online too, full details of which we have covered separately.
In short, the next Surface Laptop will not be as small as the existing Surface Laptop Go range. Instead, Quandt's leak essentially confirms that the device will arrive next week sporting a 13-inch display, compared to the 13.8-inch and 15-inch sizes in which the existing Surface Laptop 7 is available. Arguably, Microsoft has made greater compromises with the so-called Surface Laptop 13" than the Surface Laptop Go range, though.
For instance, the Surface Laptop 13" lacks an IR camera for Windows Hello, a Surface Connect port or a 120 Hz display. Based on the leaked promotional material below, the device has a built-in fingerprint reader, as well as twin USB 3.2 Type-C ports and a 60 Hz LCD. Seemingly, the Surface Laptop 13" drops to the X1P-42-100 variant of the Snapdragon X Plus too, rather than the X1P-64-100 variant found in the cheapest Surface Laptop 7 (curr. $940 on Amazon).
Moreover, it seems that the Surface Laptop 13" will only be available with 16 GB of RAM, unlike its larger siblings. Worse still, marketing material refers to 256 GB or 512 GB of UFS flash storage. Thus, Microsoft's new Surface Laptop may not support upgradeable storage either. Pricing has not leaked yet, although the device is expected to hit a lower price point than the existing Surface Laptop 7.
