We have already reported on the accessory maker CalDigit, which now offers a brand-new docking solution, which relies on the latest standard. More specifically, the Element 5 Hub uses Thunderbolt 5 and therefore offers an overall bandwidth of 120 Gbit/s. As always, the connected device must support TB5 in order to take advantage of the full capabilities of this hub.
On the corresponding product page, CalDigit explains how many monitors certain systems support. For instance, macOS doesn’t support three monitors, and a Windows laptop with Thunderbolt 4 instead of Thunderbolt 5 will be limited to two external screens. In a best case scenario, the TB5 docking station can be used with a fully compatible Windows PC and with a total of up to four 4K monitors with up to 144Hz.
The new CalDigit hub has a total of four Thunderbolt 5-compatible USB 4 V 2.0 ports, which also support USB Power Delivery with up to 15 watts. Monitors have to be connected to these ports as there’s no HDMI option. That said, there are two USB-C ports, which can transfer up to 10 GBit/s and output up to 7.5 watts, and there are two USB Type A ports with the same specifications plus another USB-A port on the other side. The Thunderbolt 5 dock can be supplied with up to 180 watts, and half of that can be put through to the connected PC or Mac. Last but not least, the CalDigit Element 5 Hub measures 4.5 x 2.8 x 1 inches and carries an official price tag of $249.
