Meta VR Glasses unveiled: Half the weight of an iPhone 18 Pro

Meta has announced the Meta VR Glasses using 5K OLED micro-displays, with Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and IMAX Enhanced certifications. The lightweight glasses weigh in at 100 grams (3.5 oz.) or about half the weight of an Apple iPhone 18 Pro smartphone. The tethered VR glasses come with a three-hour battery pack.

The Meta VR Glasses have a 37-pixels per degree (PPD) rating, which is much lower than that of a top-end VR goggle such as the Varjo VR-4 with 51 PPD. Still, it is good for a mid-level consumer-level device.

The company has not released the exact numbers for the display resolution per eye, so it is not clear whether the 5K resolution is per-eye or combined. Assuming it is a combined rating similar to that used by many other VR companies, one can assume it might have a resolution around 2,560 x 2,560 pixels per eye as found in the 140 g (4.9 oz.) Pimax Dream Air SE released in 2025.

The Meta VR Glasses can project a virtual keyboard onto flat surfaces to type on while working with work and other apps in a virtual environment controlled by gestures. The company has not revealed the OS used or its compatibility with other OSs. Since it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, it might be that the glasses will run an Android-based OS.

The company has partnered with media companies to prepare 3D movies and live content for the glasses, including sports games with front-row, 180-degree views. An additional 75 gesture-optimized games will also be available.

For communications, the Meta VR Glasses will be able to project virtual avatars of WhatsApp or Zoom callers into real spaces using a feature called Hologram Calling.

Additional specifications regarding the components of the glasses, including RAM, connectivity, or display, have not been released.

The Meta VR Glasses have an MSRP of $1,299.99 and are scheduled for release in Spring 2027.
