We've already reported on the Pimax Dream Air, and now the manufacturer has introduced a more affordable variant of this VR headset called the Dream Air SE. Users can look forward to a low weight and high comfort, as the gadget weighs just 7.1 oz and comes with an automatically adjustable head strap.
It further relies on micro-OLED displays with a resolution of 2560 x 2560 pixels per eye, which means that the regular Dream Air (non-SE) has a higher resolution. It also uses pancake lenses, supports eye tracking and automatically adjusts to the users’ pupillary distance. Furthermore, eye tracking is used to enable foveated rendering, so only the areas that users actively are looking at are rendered at full resolution.
A microphone and speakers are built into the Pimax Dream Air SE, and the gadget is available in a SLAM version and with controllers. Moreover, it’s compatible with optional Lighthouse base stations and supports 6DoF and inside-out tracking, which should make the setup pretty easy. Pimax also advertises hand tracking, which can be useful for certain VR apps such as games.
Speaking of games, the Pimax Dream Air SE is a VR headset that has to be connected to a PC via DisplayPort. Therefore, it does not have a powerful SoC and can’t render VR games locally, which is something that other products like the Meta Quest 3S (from $299 on Amazon) offers. That said, the new VR device is now orderable for prices ranging between $899 and $1,199. These are discounted preorder prices, shipping is expected to kick off in the 3rd quarter of 2025.
