On Thursday, June 25, Apple drastically increased the price of most Macs. The MacBook Neo, which was launched just this past March as the most affordable Apple notebook, now costs $100 more following this price increase. As a result, the Apple Store is now pricing the base model with 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD at $699, while the version with a 512 GB SSD and Touch ID fingerprint sensor costs as much as $799.
It’s probably no coincidence that the Apple online store began selling refurbished MacBook Neos just one day after this price increase. The base model with a 256 GB SSD costs $599 refurbished, the 512 GB model is available for $679. Apple advertises a discount of up to $120, but compared to the list price before the price increase, the refurbished MacBook Neo is only up to $20 cheaper.
At the moment, this deal isn't recommended for anyone, since the MacBook Neo is still available on Amazon for $589. However, if prices in the open market follow suit, a refurbished MacBook Neo is at least one way to save a little money. Refurbished products are often laptops that were purchased and then returned by customers.
Apple checks them to ensure they are in working order, resets the software to factory settings, and cleans the chassis. If necessary, repairs are carried out or the battery is replaced. The one-year warranty and included accessories are also identical to those of a new MacBook Neo. Probably the biggest difference is that a refurbished product from Apple is delivered in white packaging with simple lettering, rather than in the original printed packaging.
