Mac Studio with Apple M7 Ultra and more powerful cooling system said to launch two years after M5 Ultra

A few days ago, Apple raised the prices of most Macs, and at the same time limited the RAM of the Mac Studio with Apple M3 Ultra to just 96 GB – a significant downgrade, considering that Apple’s flagship desktop was initially offered with up to 512 GB of RAM at launch. According to the latest information from Bloomberg, Apple is already developing two new Mac Studio models.
First up is the Mac Studio with the Apple M5 Ultra, which is set to hit the market later this year. This model will launch around the same time as the MacBook Pro with Apple M6, meaning the expensive tower will once again be a generation behind in terms of CPU technology. Furthermore, the Mac Studio with Apple M7 Ultra is reportedly already in development and is expected to launch in 2028. According to Bloomberg, Apple is skipping not only the Apple M6 Ultra but also the M6 Pro and M6 Max. Unsurprisingly, the reason for this is AI.
To avoid falling behind in the race for the highest AI performance, Apple is reportedly investing the resources saved by the scaled-back Apple M6 series into the Apple M7, which is expected to offer significantly better AI performance. The Mac Studio with the Apple M7 Ultra is expected to feature a redesigned, more powerful cooling system. It remains unclear whether Apple will revamp the desktop computer’s design. Given that the Mac mini ($769 on Amazon) was sold for 15 years without any design updates, it’s conceivable that the Mac Studio will continue to be offered with its familiar look for the foreseeable future.
