The fifth update to the Debian 12-based 23.x series has been unleashed by the MX Linux team yesterday. This distro is now offering new kernel options, Xfce 4.20, many language updates, as well as multiple package updates, tweaks, fixes, and security patches. In addition to the updates for the desktop editions, we should also mention that the MX Raspberry Pi Respin has received the latest packages from the MX and RPiOS repositories.
These are the highlights of MX Linux 23.5, as mentioned in the official current release features page:
- Three desktop versions based on Debian 12.9 "Bookworm," sporting Xfce 4.20, KDE 5.27, and Fluxbox 1.3.7 (MX Fluxbox 4.0).
- Improved support for Realtek WiFi hardware.
- Automatic detection/activation of most Broadcom drivers.
- An advanced version with support for recent hardware, known as AHS ("Advanced Hardware Support") and using the 6.12.8 liquorix kernel with automatic updates.
- Debian 6.1.123 kernel for the other versions.
- Latest software packages: Firefox 134.0, VLC 3.0.21, Strawberry 1.1.3, Thunderbird 1.128.0, and LibreOffice 7.4.7.
- Updated MX Tools.
- Hibernation enabled by default.
- Multiple localizations for MX apps.
In addition to the previously mentioned features, all versions receive numerous bug fixes, access to new apps in the MX "test" repository, as well as more fallback modes in the installer, among other benefits.
Those who want to keep their MX Linux (or Debian) setup as secure as possible should grab Debian Security Essentials. This book is free with Kindle Unlimited ($5.90 to buy in Kindle format) and also available in paperback, for $18.90.
