Founded in 2004, Tuxedo Computers began shipping its devices with the Ubuntu-based Tuxedo OS at the end of September 2022. Unlike Ubuntu, this in-house-developed distro lacks Canonical's Snap package manager, also using its own software repositories, located on servers operated by hosting providers located in Germany. Last but not least, Tuxedo OS is not sending out any data to Canonical or Tuxedo.
Released yesterday, the latest minor update to this German distro brings the current version to 20250115, and its most important change is the update to KDE Plasma 6.2.5, a bugfix patch that was released on the last day of 2024.
In addition to the refresh of the aforementioned essential software component, Tuxedo OS 20250115 also comes with the following highlights:
- Vim 9.1, after being stuck with version 8.2 for over two years.
- An update for the amdgpu package, which moves up to 23.0.0 from 22.0.0 in the previous three releases.
- Firefox 134.0.1, up from 131.0.
- QT 6.8.1, up from 6.7.2.
- LibreOffice 24.8.3, up from 24.8.0.
- GRUB 2.12, after three releases with 2.06.
- Thunderbird 128.6.0, up from 115.15.0.
Other packages that were updated to more recent (if not the latest) versions are bash, alsa-lib, e2fsprogs, glibc, gtk, kmod, and more.
Tuxedo OS remains free, and, even more, the source code of all drivers and software packages that were modified or created by Tuxedo from scratch is freely available for anyone's eyes. In addition to coming with Tuxedo hardware and being available via the company's network-based WebFAI automatic installer, this distro can also be downloaded in ISO format (click here to go to the official downloads page).
