Carrying the codename "Xia" and to be supported until 2029, Linux Mint 22.1 arrived yesterday with modernized APT dependencies by transitioning to Aptkit and Captain, Power-saver and Balanced modes (Performance mode only on supported systems), Night Light, Cinnamon 6.4 with improved Wayland compatibility, and more.

At the end of July, Linux Mint moved up to version 22. Codenamed "Wilma," that release is based on Ubuntu Linux 24.04 LTS and, just like its successor, which is known as "Xia" and was released yesterday, it will be supported until 2029. Those still using 21.x releases have no reason to rush for now, because they will receive support until April 2027, if everything goes as planned. However, users of Linux Mint 20.x should consider updating, as the support for these old releases will end after April 2025.

Linux Mint 22.1 "Xia" is all about refining the user experience, both under the hood and on the visual side. These are the highlights of the new update:

  • Aptkit replaced aptdaemon while Captain unified the features of GDebi and apturl, both leading to a modernization of APT dependencies. Thanks to it, the system now sports better translations, as well as a simplified architecture that allows for increased reliability and easier development.
  • All computers got Power-saving and Balanced power modes, while supported systems can also enjoy a Performance mode.
  • The Night Light feature that reduces blue light exposure and is fully integrated into the Cinnamon desktop, supporting both Xorg and Wayland. By default, it is automatically enabled at sunset based on the system's timezone.
  • Cinnamon 6.4 with a new default theme, improved Wayland compatibility, native dialogs, and more.
  • The Software manager got multiple speed optimizations.
  • Wallpapers are now organized in themed sets.

The Linux Mint 22.1 update uses the same kernel (6.8) and Ubuntu LTS package base as its predecessor and all future versions will do so until 2026 to allow for easy upgrades. In 2026, the Mint team will start working on a new base. The three versions available for the 22.1 release are Xfce, Cinnamon, and MATE. All can be found on this page.
