MSI MAG Trident S 5M launches with AMD 5000G APUs and support for future upgrades
MSI has finally launched the MAG Trident S, now called the MAG Trident S 5M. Initially unveiled at CES 2021 with a Ryzen 7 4700G, MSI re-exhibited the compact PC at this year's conference with a Ryzen 7 5700G. The MAG Trident S 5M still has a 2.6-litre case, making it even smaller than the Velka 3. As such, the MAG Trident S 5M does not have enough space for a dedicated GPU or a corresponding PCIe slot.
Still, MSI promises that the integrated Radeon RX Vega 8 GPU should achieve decent gaming performance with AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) enabled. Although not all games support FSR, MSI has provided some Godfall gaming benchmarks to demonstrate its capabilities. Alternatively, one could stream games via Google Stadia, Steam Remote Play or NVIDIA GeForce NOW.
Additionally, MSI has included SO-DIMM slots for dual-channel DDR4-3200 RAM and two M.2 2280 slots that operate at PCIe Gen 3 x4. MSI has equipped the MAG Trident S 5M with a 2.5-inch drive bay too, should you wish to use slower storage. All slots can be accessed by loosening one screw, making the MAG Trident S 5M easier to build in than many small form factor PCs.
Currently, MSI offers the MAG Trident S 5M with a Ryzen 3 5300G, Ryzen 5 5600G or Ryzen 7 5700G APU, all with the AMD B300 chipset. For some reason, MSI has not announced how much the MAG Trident S 5M costs. However, a German retailer already sells a configuration for €808, including VAT. All MAG Trident S 5M configurations come with the following ports:
- 1x 3.5 mm audio combo jack
- 1x DC jack
- 1x DisplayPort 1.4
- 1x HDMI 2.0 out
- 1x Kensington lock
