Expensive high-end fun. MSI sells a lavishly equipped gaming notebook for almost EUR 2200. A BluRay burner and two mSATA SSDs set up in a RAID array are found under the hood of the GT70. The matte Full HD screen, the illuminated keyboard and the good sound system are also impressive. Reason enough for contenders to panic?

The MSI GT70 is a 17-inch gaming notebook that aims to have the speediest of performance available. While keeping the price at a reasonable level, this notebook has a functional keyboard, several USB 3.0 ports, a Blu-ray burner and very good graphics performance. It was hard to find much to complain about with this gamer-focused machine.

While the GT70 wraps itself around the latest technologies, its build impressed us most. The keyboard, trackpad, chassis and speakers all bleed quality, sidestepping so many of the common sins that PC makers commit. This finely crafted icing make its screaming performance that much sweeter.

Gaming is obviously core for the GT70 and, thanks to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 670M GPU, it has no worries when it comes to playing the latest titles. MSI has also added its Turbo Drive Engine technology, which means speed boosts for video decoding and encoding, as well as 3D gaming. Intel HD 4000 graphics are also on board for less demanding graphical tasks.

It’s clear that the new hardware in the GT70 is a significant improvement over last year’s GT780R models. While the graphics card may remain a generation old, the higher clock speeds most certainly help improve performance. Combine this with the new Ivy Bridge processor and SSDs in RAID, and you have a supremely capable gaming laptop. Heck, even Windows boots in 11 seconds flat! My only major complaint is that MSI have bundles this with so much unnecessary software that out of 111GB of the RAIDed SSDs, you’re only left with 58.8GB free. May as well just reinstall Windows 7

Gaming notebooks are tricky beasts to evaluate. The best of them balance the speediest current-day performance with the savviest design, but a perfect combination will cost you. The MSI GT70’s fun lighting features and runaway performance, combined with a reasonable price for the hardware, add up to one of the best-value laptops you can buy for serious gaming.

Overall, its few frames under 30 fps in high-quality tests are all that keep the MSI GT70 0NC-011US (Best Deal: $1,999.99 at Amazon) from unseating the more expensive GT783-625US as our under-$3,000 gaming laptop Editors' Choice. If you're willing to give up a little resolution or eye candy (as in Unigine's Heaven 3.0 benchmark, which posted 35.2 fps without anti-aliasing), the GT70 should run the toughest DX11 games, and its cutting-edge CPU and storage system make it an exceptional multimedia and productivity performer.

MSI's gaming notebook may have a Dragon pattern on its lid and palm rest, but it's not quite an epic fire-breathing beast. The look of the MSI GT70 Dragon Edition may ultimately decide whether you go for this gaming notebook or not (as well as the price, of course). Under the hood, it has a fast configuration that's very fast for the most part, but we think it could use a higher-end graphics card to match the "premium" vibe that this notebook gives off.

Thanks to MSI's supplying of their chassis to other companies, the GT70 isn't as much of a standout 17-inch gaming system as it could be. The MSI GT70 Dragon Edition took almost everything we threw at it, chewed it up and came back for more. It stands as a solid example of a hardware refresh done right, keeping everything that made the original great while still tossing in enough improvements to keep buyers interested. For the most part, its faults include a few things MSI didn't fix from the previous version: a stellar screen that suffers from poor viewing angles and a loud fan.

We've gone over the hard numbers of the MSI GT70 and seen some interesting results. But as with everything, it's not all about the hard figures. Over the review, I've found that there's a lot to love about the MSI GT70 Dragon Edition 2. But also, there's some stuff that's not so great. In the end, the GT70 should probably on your list of potentials, though you might stray away from the Dragon Edition unless you want something especially special. At $3,199, the Dragon Edition 2 is a bit overpriced for what you get, but it does offer top-notch performance and a unique dragon motif.

Each time I've tested this chassis from MSI I've been a little less enamored with it. Finding a good gaming notebook isn't a trivial thing and there's a lot of room for innovation and improvement in this market segment, but it seems like only Alienware, Razer, and maybe ASUS are actually trying (although Toshiba's next-gen Qosmio is a pretty attractive alternative as well).

MSI GT70 2OC-065US
Gaming notebooks are all the rage, and MSI has come out with one particular device to outdo them all. A notebook features a matte 17 inch screen and matrix display options allowing up to four different displays at once for maximum multi-tasking during gameplay. In view of such a large screen, we expect the hardware to be more than capable of handling the amount of data. It comprises a 4th generation Intel Core i7 processor in combination with a powerful Nvidia GeForce GTX 770M graphic cards, which can be further accelerated with Nvidia GPU Boost 2.0.
However, due to the hardware, the laptop is bulky with a height of 2.88 cm and a weight of 3.75 kg. So lugging it around will take some effort. Gaming usually means that a lot of heat is produced. The laptop has a single fan with Cooler Boost 2 technology, which is supposed to provide 15% more cooling power than normal fans and works more silently. For online gaming enthusiasts, there is the Killer DoubleShot connectivity feature that combines Ethernet and Wifi for superlative Internet data flow with the ability to handle several data streams at one time. Other gamer centric features include a keyboard by SteelSeries with backlight and speakers by Dynaudio with integrated subwoofers and Audio Boost options to please even the most demanding of players.

Ultimately, what MSI does well with the GT70 is they give you a high performance gaming notebook (or mobile workstation) platform that can be customized in a variety of ways, and the price is generally comparable or somewhat lower than what you’ll pay for equivalent offerings from Clevo resellers – not to mention the ASUS G750JZ and Alienware 17 alternatives.

For the price of $2779, the MSI GT70 2PE Dominator Pro doesn’t come cheap. But for its price it comes maxed out with the best possible specifications and features you will need from a gaming notebook. Last year’s GT70 was my favorite gaming notebook and this year’s updated MSI GT70 2PE Dominator Pro still remains one of the best. It’s not just a gaming notebook, it’s a behemoth machine that will make gamers and geeks full with glee when they use it.

Starting with the build quality and design of the GT70 Dominator MSI have delivered a system which scores well on the former and reasonably well on the latter. It certainly feels solid to hold and there were no defects on our sample. The screen is lovely with great viewing angles, the keyboard is solid, one of the best on a laptop, as has been the case with MSI systems for a while and there are nice touches around the system like the gold plated audio connectors or high quality components used.

The MSI GT70 2PC Dominator has all the right ingredients for a top-flight gaming PC, with the latest Intel and Nvidia hardware, a Blu-ray drive, and finer touches, like a customizable backlit keyboard and built-in subwoofer. While we would like to see better touchpad support for Windows 8 gestures, it's a small complaint on such a potent gaming system. In terms of performance alone, the MSI GT70 2PC Dominator is well ahead of the Asus G75VW-DH72, and easily replaces it as our Editors' Choice for midrange gaming laptops. If you want even more performance horsepower, you'll need to pay for it, leaving midrange gaming rigs behind and opting for premium systems like the Origin EON17-SLX (2014), which put up better benchmark scores but costs $1,300 more.

The MSI is exceedingly quick, it's got a good screen, and its ergonomics and speakers are all impressive. But it has a huge, flashy design and it lacks any battery longevity. Those are issues that aren't always tackled by the MSI's rivals, though, and the GT70 is faster and cheaper – the top specification versions of both Alienware machines is several hundred pounds higher. That makes the GT70 one of the best value gaming notebooks on the market.

The GT70 is the fastest gaming laptop we've ever seen but, despite its speed, it's no pricier than the competition: its £1,299 price is in the same ballpark as the Asus, it's barely more than the slimline GS70, and it's cheaper than the Gigabyte and Toshiba laptops. None of the MSI's rivals address all of the minor issues that affect the GT70, and all of them are slower. If you need a brutish gaming machine and you're more concerned with benchmarks than batteries, then this is the best gaming notebook on the market.

The MSI GT70 is a traditional gaming laptop, so it’s got the usual range of strengths and weaknesses: incredible gaming power, a strong processor, and loud design that’s designed to attract attention. The screen and speakers are good, and the keyboard is also impressive, but the MSI is hampered by its sheer size, loud fan and poor battery life. Neither of the MSI’s rivals solved all of these problems, though, and the GT70 stands tall over the Alienware 14 and Asus G750JX in two key areas: it’s much quicker in games, and it’s better value than both, with the Alienware’s top models proving more expensive and the Asus costing a similar amount for poorer performance.

MSI GT70 2PE-1051FR Dominator Pro
Gamers are sure to be delighted with the release of the MSI GT70 2PE-1051FR Dominator Pro. It utilizes the best graphics chip for laptops out in the market today, the Nvidia GTX 880M. And if that is not enough, with 8 GB RAM paired and Intel Core i7 processor with a turbo clock of up to 3.7 GHz, the MSI Dominator Pro is the definition of a graphical monster. It goes without saying that this mammoth will play all high-end games with the highest setting with ease.
Having great graphics alone will not be enough if the screen is not on par. Fortunately, the MSI Dominator Pro has a 17.3 inch display, which is wide enough to enjoy games to its fullest. Thanks to its resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels, it can display videos and pictures in the best FullHD quality. To top it off, the laptop also comes with a Blu-ray drive. Like other gaming laptops, the main issue is battery life and unfortunately the MSI Dominator Pro is no exception. Housing such powerful hardware under the hood, it is more feasible to keep the laptop connected to a power supply. So, it is not the best choice for a portable device.
For a gaming laptop, bulkiness and short battery life are to be expected. With such high-end graphics, the MSI Dominator Pro will, without a shadow of a doubt, give you the best gaming experience.

If you can come to grips with that, and as long as you don’t mind those other quibbles we mentioned, there’s really nothing stopping the MSI GT70 2PE from being your next favorite gaming companion. It retains all of the strengths of the GT60 model we reviewed last year, but with even more power and a truly ridiculous SSD RAID storage configuration. In short, it’s one of the fastest mobile gaming solutions you’re going to find—and it’s just $2,699.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
