In times of memory shortages, you have to get creative. Lenovo probably had the same thought when designing its new flagship tablet, the Lenovo Yoga Tab Plus Gen 2 (currently available for US$ 799 at lenovo.com).
On the one hand, many people no longer need that much internal storage, since photos and videos are often stored in the cloud. On the other hand, large premium tablets with 13-inch screens are particularly well suited to working with large photo or video files.
Limited internal storage in the Lenovo tablet, but...
Lenovo now equips its flagship tablet with just 256 GB of storage, along with a choice of 12 or 16 GB of RAM. That does not sound like much at first; Apple offers up to 1 TB of storage, although only at a hefty premium.
Instead, Lenovo has brought back a long-established feature from tablets and smartphones that is rarely found in flagship tablets: The Yoga Tab Plus Gen 2 comes with a microSD card slot. This is surprising, as we have not seen an Android tablet in this price range with such a slot for a long time, and Apple ignores microSD cards in its tablets altogether.
Transfer speeds are significantly lower than with internal storage
This lets you expand the storage by up to 2 TB, although card prices have also risen sharply recently. It also makes exchanging data very easy by inserting the card into another device.
However, you should note that the flagship tablet's microSD reader could only read data at around 90 MB/s in our test, with even slower write speeds. For sequential writes and reads, the internal storage is almost 40 times faster.
Frequent microSD users benefit
However, if you already own and use a microSD card, frequently transfer data from your camera to your tablet, for example, or do not consider storage speed quite so important, the Yoga Tab Plus Gen 2 is one of the rare flagship tablets that lets you insert and read a microSD card.
