Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro 14ACH5 in review: 14-inch powerhouse with good battery life
With the Yoga Slim 7 Pro 14ACH5, Lenovo has a stylish, compact 14-inch laptop in its lineup that is powered by a Ryzen 9 5900HX APU. Our database doesn't have any immediately comparable rivals (slim, mobile, 45-watt CPU). Therefore, we'll use similarly priced 14-inch laptops with ULV CPUs (15 to 28 watts), such as the Schenker Vision 14, the LG Gram 14Z90P, the Asus ExpertBook B9 B9400CE, the Huawei MateBook X Pro 2021, and the MSI Modern 14 B11SB as a comparison.

Case - A stylish metal case for the Yoga Slim
Lenovo packs the Yoga's technology into a sleek, slim aluminum case that comes in a dark gray (Slate Gray) color. The laptop doesn't have a maintenance hatch. The battery is firmly built into the device. The laptop doesn't reveal any manufacturing deficiencies. The gap dimensions are accurate, and there are no material protrusions. Moreover, the base unit and lid can be slightly twisted, but the whole situation is still kept within limits. The tight hinges keep the lid firmly in position and hardly let it wobble. The maximum aperture angle is just under 180 degrees, and opening the lid with one hand is possible.
In terms of dimensions, the devices in our comparison field don't differ much despite having different screen formats in some cases. The Asus ExpertBook is the most compact device. There are two sides when it comes to weight: The ultra-light devices (Asus ExpertBook, LG Gram, Schenker Vision 14) have a weight of just under 1,000 grams each. The remaining devices weigh 300 grams more.
Connectivity - The Lenovo laptop lacks Thunderbolt
The two USB-C slots in the 14-inch device work according to the USB 3.2 Gen 2 standard. Power Delivery and DisplayPort via USB-C are supported. Consequently, the Yoga offers two video outputs. Lenovo also equipped the laptop with a USB-A port (USB 3.2 Gen 1). There's no memory card reader, though.
The ports are located in the rear areas of both sides. The space next to the palm rest remains free of cables. It would've been ideal if Lenovo had placed a USB-C port on both sides of the device.
Communication
The Wi-Fi chip (Realtek RTL8852A) supports the 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax Wi-Fi standards and provides Bluetooth 5 functionality. The transfer speeds determined under optimal conditions (no other Wi-Fi devices nearby, short distance between the laptop and the server PC) are decent, but they clearly lag behind the rates of the Intel-based competition. We use the Netgear Nighthawk AX12 Wi-Fi 6 tri-band router for testing.
Webcam
The webcam (0.9 MP) produces images with a maximum resolution of 1280x720 pixels. There are problems with color accuracy. With a color deviation of around 15, the target (DeltaE less than 3) is missed by a wide margin.
Accessories
The laptop comes with the usual documents: A quick-start guide and warranty information.
Maintenance
The bottom cover has to be removed to access the interior. To do this, all screws on the device's underside need to be removed. Afterwards, the bottom cover can be lifted off with the help of a flat spatula or a grout finishing tool. You can then access the SSD, the WLAN module, the BIOS battery, the battery, and the fans. The RAM is firmly soldered.
Warranty
Lenovo provides a two-year warranty for the 14-incher in Germany. Extending the warranty to a three-year on-site warranty would cost about 90 Euros (~$106).
Input devices - Backlit keyboard
Keyboard
The flat keys of the backlit chiclet keyboard offer a short travel and a clear pressure point. We like the resistance provided by the keys. The keyboard yields slightly during typing, but this didn't prove to be annoying. The two-stage keyboar backlight offers an automatic mode in addition to manual control. All in all, Lenovo delivers a keyboard that's suitable for everyday use here.
Touchpad
The smooth surface of the multitouch-capable ClickPad (about 12 x 7.5 cm) allows fingers to glide easily on it. The pad responds to inputs in the corners as well. It has a short travel and a clear pressure point.
Display - IPS in the 16:10 format
The Yoga is equipped with a 14-inch screen (2880x1800 pixels) in the 16:10 format. The brightness (389.8 cd/m²) and contrast (1,507:1) of the glossy display look good to us. The response times of the 90 Hz panel are acceptable, but they won't knock anyone's socks off.
The display flickers at a frequency of 300 Hz at brightness levels of 40 % and below. This can lead to headaches and/or eye problems in sensitive users.

* ... smaller is better
The display shows a very decent color reproduction out of the box, and with a color deviation of 3.4, it only just misses the target (DeltaE less than 3). Furthermore, it doesn't suffer from a blue tint. Calibration doesn't lead to any improvements. Moreover, the sRGB color space is covered by 100%. The AdobeRGB (76%) and DCI-P3 (76%) color spaces are not fully reproduced.

The screen shows slow response rates in our tests and will be unsatisfactory for gamers. In comparison, all tested devices range from 0.165 (minimum) to 636 (maximum) ms. » 49 % of all devices are better. This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (32.8 ms). |
Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 300 Hz | ≤ 40 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 300 Hz (worst case, e.g., utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 40 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 300 Hz is relatively high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering. However, there are reports that some users are still sensitive to PWM at 500 Hz and above, so be aware. In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8705 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. |
The viewing-angle stable IPS panel can be read from any position. The brightness and contrast would allow the display to be viewable outdoors, but the reflective surface of the screen spoils the experience.
Performance - A 45-watt APU is housed in the compact Lenovo laptop
With the Yoga Slim 7 Pro, Lenovo has a 14-inch laptop in its lineup that cuts a fine figure in all CPU-heavy application areas.
Test conditions
The laptop offers three energy profiles ("Smart Cooling", "High Performance", "Power Saving Mode"), between which you can switch using the key combination "Fn" + "Q". We used the "Smart Cooling" profile. Additionally, we ran some benchmarks using the "High Performance" and "Power Saving" profiles. The results can be found in the comparison tables.
Power Saving Mode | Smart Cooling | High Performance | |
---|---|---|---|
PL1 | 12.5 Watt | 25 Watt | 45 Watt |
PL2 | 12.5 Watt | 35 Watt | 65 Watt |
The "Power Saving Mode" energy profile can be enabled without issues in everyday use. In this case, the reduced computing power that is available is more than sufficient for office and Internet use. In addition, the mode results in a small gain in battery life.
Processor
The CPU part of the Ryzen 9 5900HX APU (Cezanne) consists of an octa-core processor that operates at a base speed of 3.3 GHz. An increase up to 4.65 GHz is possible via Turbo. Simultaneous multithreading (two threads can be processed per core) is also supported.
The Cinebench R15 benchmark's multithread test is processed at 3.6 GHz for a short time, after which the clock speed drops to 3.3 GHz. The single-thread test is run at 3.6 to 4.65 GHz. On battery power, the CPU runs at 3.3 GHz (multithread) or 2.2 to 3.4 GHz (single-thread), respectively.
We verify if the CPU Turbo is also consistently used when plugged in by running the Cinebench R15 benchmark's multithread test in a continuous loop for at least 30 minutes. Turbo is used to a small extent. Using the "High Performance Mode" profile results in a slight increase of clock speeds.

System performance
The fast and smooth system offers more than enough processing power for CPU-intensive applications. The integrated GPU allows playing computer games to a limited extent. This is complemented by very good PCMark results. RAM (16 GB, DDR4-3200, on-board) runs in dual-channel mode, and expanding it isn't possible.

Graphics card
AMD's Vega 8 integrated graphics core supports DirectX 12 and reaches speeds of up to 2,100 MHz. The maximum can also be maintained for a long time as our The Witcher 3 test shows. The "High Performance" energy profile doesn't affect graphics performance. The 3DMark results are slightly above average overall.
More would definitely have been possible in terms of graphics performance: Since soldered RAM is used, Lenovo should have chosen faster LPDDR4X-4267 memory instead of DDR4-3200 memory. This would have made even better use of the GPU and delivered higher benchmark results.

Gaming performance
The Ryzen 9 APU brings many of the games found in our database smoothly onto the screen. The majority of titles achieve playable frame rates at HD resolution (1280x720 pixels) and medium to partly high-quality levels. Games with moderate hardware requirements allow more. Even playing modern games is possible - at reduced quality settings.

In order to verify whether the frame rates remain largely constant over a prolonged period of time, we let the game The Witcher 3 run for about 60 minutes at Full HD resolution and maximum quality settings. The character is not moved. A drop in frame rates wasn't found.
