Lenovo ThinkBook 15 G3 ACL review: Low-emissions office notebook that goes the distance ↺
With the ThinkBook, Lenovo delivers an office notebook that is meant to provide an option in between the IdeaPad and the ThinkPad: a solid, affordable notebook for private and professional users. Its main competition includes devices like the Asus ExpertBook B1 B1500CEAE, the HP ProBook 445 G8, and the Acer Extensa 15 EX215-54.
We already tested this device's predecessor and successor, the ThinkBook 15 G2 ITL and the Lenovo ThinkBook 15 G4 ABA. While the G3 model is based on AMD's Cezanne and Lucienne APUs, the G2 (Tiger Lake, Renoir) and the G4 (Alder Lake, Barcelo) are available with either Intel or AMD chips.

Case and connectivity - a Lenovo computer that offers USB-C Power Delivery
The silver-grey case doesn't show any manufacturing flaws. However, the computer's base can be twisted and warped a bit too much: there is a noticeable lack of rigidity here. Lenovo relies on metal (back of the lid) and plastic elements (base) along with matte, smooth surfaces. The battery (screwed, rather than glued) and the other internals are accessible by removing the bottom shell. On the plus side, the built-in webcam (0.9 MP, max. 1280x720 pixels) comes with a mechanical cover.
The computer comes with two USB-A (USB 3.2 Gen 1) and two USB-C ports (USB 3.2 Gen 2; Power Delivery, Displayport via USB-C). The notebook has three video outputs in total (2x DP, 1x HDMI). The SD memory card reader (reference card: AV PRO SD 128 GB V60) is a medium-speed model.
The WiFi transfer rates under optimal conditions (no other WiFi devices in the immediate vicinity, with a short distance between the notebook and the server PC) are good but don't quite correspond to the WiFi chip's full capabilities (MediaTek MT7921; 802.11 ax).

Input devices - the ThinkBook G3 comes with a lit keyboard
Flat smooth keys of the lit chiclet keyboard (2 brightness levels) have a short travel as well as a clear pressure point, with a pleasant level of resistance for the keys. The keyboard yields slightly while typing, although it was not too disruptive. All in all, Lenovo delivers a keyboard that is suitable for everyday use.
The smooth surface of the multi-touch clickpad (approx. 10.5 x 7 cm) makes gliding easy for the fingers, while also responding to inputs in the corners. The pad has a short drop and a clear pressure point.
Display - a Lenovo Notebook with an IPS panel
The matte 15.6-inch screen (1920x1080 pixels) falls short of the target range (> 300 cd/m² and 1000:1) in terms of brightness (271.4 cd/m²) as well as contrast (776:1). Most of the competitors fare better here - with the exception of the Extensa. On the plus side, the panel does not show any PWM flickering with any of the brightness settings.

The screen displays colors properly as delivered: however, the target color accuracy (DeltaE < 3) can't quite be reached, with a deviation of 4.17. The display cannot reproduce the AdobeRGB (45%), sRGB (66%), and DCI-P3 (44%) color spaces. The panel is therefore not appropriate for application scenarios that rely on color fidelity. In this respect, however, things don't look much better for the competitors, either.

The IPS panel has a stable viewing angle and can be read from any position. It's not a problem to read the screen outdoors, as long as the sun is not too bright.
Performance - Lenovo relies on Ryzen-APUs
Lenovo's office notebook is aimed at both private and professional users. Only models with a Ryzen 5 5500U or Ryzen 7 5700U APU were available at the time of testing. The identically set up predecessor (ThinkBook 15 G2) and successor series (ThinkBook 15 G4) offer a little more choice. The G2 is available with Intel Tiger Lake or AMD Renoir chips,while the G4 can come with Intel Alder Lake or AMD Barcelo hardware.
Test conditions
The key combination "Fn" + "Q" can be used to switch between the three manufacturer-specific energy profiles ("Intelligent Cooling", "High Performance", and "Battery Saving Mode"). The test was carried out with the standard "Intelligent Cooling" profile. The profiles differ slightly in terms of multi-threaded CPU performance, while GPU performance always stays the same.

Processor
The CPU part of the Ryzen 5 5500U APU (Lucienne) consists of six cores with a base clock of 2.1 GHz. A boost up to 4.05 GHz is possible via Turbo. Simultaneous multithreading (two threads per core) is also supported.
The multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark was processed at 4 GHz for a short time, although the clock speed then drops to between 3.4 and 3.5 GHz. The single thread test ran at 1.8 to 4.05 GHz. The CPU worked at 2.5 to 3.5 GHz (multithread) or 1.4 to 3.5 GHz (single thread) while in battery mode. The CB15 loop test confirmed that sustained use of the CPU Turbo is possible. The "High Performance" profile provides a slight increase in multi-threaded performance.

System performance
This smooth-running system handles office and internet applications as well as gaming with low graphics settings. However, part of the performance is wasted, because the RAM (8 GB, DDR4-3200, onboard) only runs in single-channel mode. Installing another RAM module would help things quite a bit - especially in terms of the graphics performance. The available RAM's transfer rates are on a normal level for DDR4-3200 memory. The PCMark results are good.

Storage devices
Lenovo has equipped the ThinkBook with a PCIe 3 SSD (M.2 2242; M.2 2280 models will also fit) from Samsung, which offers a storage capacity of 256 GB. The transfer rates are good, but it's not a top-of-the-line SSD. It had some drops in performance during the latter half of the DiskSpd loop. The notebook can also accommodate a second PCIe SSD.

GPU performance
AMD's Vega 7 iGPU allows continuous operation at full speed (1800 MHz), which can be seen in the Witcher 3 test. The below-average benchmark results are due to the RAM running in single-channel mode. The built-in hardware can run less-demanding games smoothly on the screen in low settings. More performance would be possible with active dual-channel mode (i.e. installation of another RAM module, see comparison tables).

Noise emissions
This Lenovo laptop does not produce a lot of noise throughout the entire load range. In everyday use (office, internet) the fan is often inactive and thus silent. The fan is discreetly restrained while under medium load, and noise levels of up to 45.6 dB(A) were measured under full load.

Temperature
The notebook doesn't get particularly hot, with temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) being registered at two measuring points during the stress test. In everyday use (office, internet) the temperatures are in the green range.
The stress test (Prime95 and Furmark in continuous operation) represents an extreme scenario for checking system stability under full load. The CPU (4 GHz) and GPU (1800 MHz) reach their maximum clock rates at the beginning of the test. The rates drop only slightly to 3.8 GHz (CPU) and 1,600 MHz (GPU) as the process continues.
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 42.2 °C / 108 F, compared to the average of 34.2 °C / 94 F, ranging from 21.2 to 62.5 °C for the class Office.

Battery life
This 15.6-incher can manage a runtime of 8:06 h in our practical WiFi test (which involves calling up websites using a script) - a good, but not outstanding value. Within the field of competitors, this Lenovo computer is only soundly beaten by the HP ProBook 445 G8.

Cons
Verdict - a solid office notebook without serious flaws
The built-in combination of a Ryzen 5 5500U CPU and 8 GB RAM (single-channel mode, onboard) handles office and internet applications as well as light gaming easily. Installing a second memory module (with dual-channel mode active) is recommended in order to unlock the AMD CPU's full potential.

There's not much to complain about when it comes to heat and noise, although the fan could have been a little quieter under full load. This relatively light laptop (ca. 1.7 kg/3.8 lb) can manage around 8 hours of battery life while connected to WiFi. One big plus: charging is done via a USB-C power adapter.
There's room for improvement when it comes to the screen (15.6-inch, FHD, IPS). Brightness, contrast, and color space coverage are all too low - screen quality is not much better in some of the competitor laptops, however. The base unit could do with more rigidity as well, while the short, one-year warranty deserves criticism.
One alternative to the ThinkBook would be the HP ProBook 445 G8, for example, which offers better battery life and scores points with its low noise emissions under load. The Extensa 15 EX215-24 could be considered a budget alternative: it is inferior to the ThinkBook in most respects but has a lot of computing performance per dollar with its Core i5-1135G7. That notebook is already available for around 430 Euros (US$446) or 400 Euros (US$415), with or without Windows respectively.
Why buy the ThinkBook 15 G3 when the newer G4 is already available? Isn't the "old" G2 enough?
The G4 model we reviewed offers more processing power while using a comparable CPU configuration to the G3 (6 cores, 12 threads) - or the G2, for that matter (Core i5-1135G7; 4 cores, 8 threads). If you don't need to squeeze out every last drop of performance from your machine, the G3 and G2 have more attractive prices. The G3 scores points with more multi-thread performance and better battery life, while the G2 has the advantage of greater single-thread performance as well as a Thunderbolt 3 port.
Pricing and availability
The ThinkBook 15 G3 ACL is available from Heinzsoft (EUR 603/US$626) in the configuration reviewed. It is available from Amazon for around US$728, as well as from Amazon India for around ₹33,990.
