Lenovo unveiled the Legion 5i Gen 9 gaming laptop at CES 2024 with up to a Core i9-14900HX CPU, an RTX 4070 GPU, and a 16-inch 240 Hz refresh rate IPS display. Users who don’t want or can’t afford the performance of the top-of-the-line configuration can also order the notebook with mid-range internals like an RTX 4060 laptop GPU and a Core i7-13650HX CPU.
Under normal circumstances, the Legion 5i Gen 9 (2024) with an RTX 4060, a Core i7-13650HX, 16 GB of RAM, a 16-inch 1600p display @165 Hz, and 1 TB of storage retails for around $1,300. However, Walmart is now running a pretty sweet promotion on the device and you can now get the laptop for only $879, a discount of $420.99 over the list price.
With the discount in place (linked below), the Legion 5i is bound to make a lot of people quite happy as the laptop is an excellent FHD gamer.
Lenovo Legion 5i Gen 9 doesn’t compromise on performance
Equipped with an RTX 4060 laptop GPU, our Legion 5i review unit impressed us with its gaming chops that didn’t diminish under continued load. The RTX 4060 inside the machine performed 9% better than the average RTX 4060 laptop in our database in the 3DMark test suite.
This synthetic performance was on full display in our gaming tests where the RTX 4060 managed to play all the benchmarked games above 60 FPS at FHD/ultra. Dropping the settings down can also net enough performance to saturate the 1600p 165 Hz refresh rate screen of the Legion 5i SKU on sale. You can increase the performance of the GPU even further by overclocking through the built-in Vantage app.
Aside from performance, the Legion 5i Gen 9 impresses with its expandability options. There are two SO-DIMM slots for up to 64 GB of user-configurable RAM and two M.2 slots for storage upgrades. Additionally, the laptop sports a good port selection which, unfortunately, lacks Thunderbolt 4 and a solid battery life of around 7 hours in our WLAN test.
All in all, with the Legion 5i Gen 9, Lenovo has crafted a speedy mid-range gaming notebook that should suffice for most users.
