Introduced in early 2024, the Lenovo Legion 7i Gen 9 is an outstanding 16-inch gaming laptop. Legion 7i Gen 9 (2024) is highly rated and has only a few weaknesses
The Legion 7i Gen 9 excels in the most important areas. From the chassis stability to performance and port selection, there is little that the Legion 7i gets wrong. This resulted in the laptop getting a “Very good” rating of 91% in our review.
During our testing, we were happy to see the laptop feature a superb and thin chassis with a comfortable per-key RGB keyboard, a good trackpad, and plenty of ports. Aside from the lack of an ethernet jack, the port selection covers all the basses with:
- One Thunderbolt 4 port
- Three Type-C ports with DP and PD
- A Type-A connector
- An HDMI 2.1 out
- An SD card reader
- One 3.5 mm audio jack
On the inside, the Legion 7i Gen 9 on sale packs 32 GB of RAM that is expandable to 64 GB thanks to two SO-DIMM slots, a 1 TB SSD that users can also augment, and a 99.99 Wh battery that lasted for 7 hours in our WLAN test.
For CPU and GPU, we are looking at a flagship 24-core Core i9-14900HX and a 140 W RTX 4070 laptop GPU. Unsurprisingly, the Core i9-14900HX is a beast and allows the Legion 7i to chew through even the most demanding tasks. Similarly, the RTX 4070 laptop GPU is also plenty powerful, as our review device showed impressive QHD gaming potential. For instance, the Legion 7i Gen 9 played games like Baldur’s Gate 3 at QHD/ultra at above 60 FPS.
Finally, the 16-inch 1600p IPS panel will do a fine job whether you are playing games or watching movies with a 240 Hz refresh rate, 100% sRGB coverage, and Nvidia G-Sync/Advanced Optimus. That said, we’d have liked to see Lenovo offer a full DCI-P3 panel for the creators out there, as the notebook is plenty powerful for photo and video editing.
In the end, gamers on the hunt for an upper mid-range gaming laptop that is solidly built, has plenty of performance, and can be upgraded down the line, should definitely check out the Lenovo Legion 7i Gen 9 on sale.
